Amber Patrice Riley -
Monday January 2,
6:45amI sipped my coffee as I walked into Grace and Truth hospital where I currently work as Chief of surgery. I walked to the elevator and pressed the button.
"Good Morning Dr. Riley," Chief Moore greets.
"Good Morning Chief Moore," I say back.
"Our new Chief of Pediatrics is here and I can't wait for you to meet him," he smiles wide. Chief Moore is fifty five year old African American legend of this hospital. He's been here for years and still sharp as ever.
"Wow," I said. I was wondering when they were going to replace Will. We dated for a year and a half before he died in a car accident. Surgeons as came and gone but none of them could ever fill his shoes.
"Listen I'm sorry about Will," he says as we step off the elevator.
"He was a great surgeon and a man of honor, I'll forget him and the work that he did," Chief says.
"Thank you," I replied. We walk over to where everyone was gathered.
"Good morning everyone, I just got some fantastic news, Grace and Truth is the number one hospital in Michigan," Chief Moore says to everyone. We all clap. I scan the hospital and I spot a new face. A very handsome face. He was standing over behind the board. He was tall and skinny. With a neatly trimmed beard and curly hair. He must of been the new Chief of Pediatrics.
"I would also like to welcome August Alsina he will be the new Chief of Pediatrics," The Chief says and everyone turns and applause.
"Don't stop now keep up the hard work, we maybe number one but we have to stay number one, remember patient satisfaction keep them updated on their loved ones, and provide them with exceptional service, thats all I have to say Dr. Riley would you like to speak?" The Chief asks taking me a little off guard. I was so busy watching August, he was so fine I couldn't help but stare.
"Uh well I'll piggy back on what the Chief said but I'll also add, make sure the board is updated at all times no mix ups, update and sign off on all charts they are due at the end of the day, residents look after your interns teach them this is a teaching program, help them, that is all everyone have a great day," I say.
Everyone walks over to their places. I walk over to the board and grab my charts. "Morning Chief Riley," my annoying yet very intelligent resident Ashley Woods greets.
"Good Morning Doctor Woods, I need you to update me on Mrs. Conners the patient who has the collapsed lung,"
"Oh yes I have her booked and ready to go into the OR, I performed her physical exam, and I did x-rays on her lungs. I wasn't sure she was wheezing but I didn't see anything. So I did a CT scan,"
"And what you find?" I ask.
"It's too much pressure on the lungs,
"Alright get ready to scrub in and prep for surgery," I say as I finish my coffee. I walk over to the board and grab the marker. I write my name down, my residents name and the type of surgery I'll be performing today. As I was writing Dr. Alsina approached me.
"So...I finally get ta' meet da' chief of surgery that everyone's been tellin' me bout," he says with a smile. I can't help but get mesmerized in that New Orleans accent of his. To make things worse he flashes a set of perfect pearly whites. God He's sight for sore eyes.
"U-Uhm yes my names A-Amber Riley," I stutter before stomping my foot. He was making so nervous and I don't know why.
"August Alsina, nice to meet you," he says before we shake hands. He stepped a little closer to me and he smelt so damn good. I tried to catch the sent longer but he pulled away.
