To say Maggie was upset was an understatement.

If she hadn't stayed up late trying to decipher her parent's journal, she might not have been late for her job. Stan may have had time to talk to her, instead of telling her that he 'couldn't waste any time because his great niece and nephew were coming for the Summer'. Yeah, today had been great.

Can you sense the sarcasm?

Maggie pushed her hands deeper into the pockets of her dark blue hoodie, one of her earbuds in and the other hanging from the neckline of her jacket. She kept her eyes low, hoping to ignore the whispers about her as she passed everyone.

Sure her parents still hadn't turned up, but that's the life of an adventurer, right? There's always that one mission that you just don't come back from.

"Hi!" a girl about Maggie's age with long brown hair and braces exclaimed, startling Maggie out of her thoughts. Maggie looked around, trying to figure out who the girl was talking to, before she realized the girl was looking right at her.

"Me? H-Hi me?" she asked, eyes wide. The brown haired girl snickered.

"Well duh." She smiled. "I'm Mabel, I just got here yesterday. I'm staying here for the Summer with my Grunkle Stan and he told me to go out and see if I could find at least one 'normal kid' my age to be friends with!" Mabel smiled at Maggie, her silver braces almost sparkling.

"O-Oh.. you're Stan's niece." Maggie realized.

"Yuppers!" Mabel said, her smile still wide. "I still don't know youuurr name though." She clasped her hands together in front of her, giving a puppy-dog look to Maggie.

"Uhm.. I'm Magn-I mean Maggie Greenfield," Maggie stuttered, cursing herself internally for almost using her actual name.

"Wow!! That's such a cool name!" Mabel smiled so widely her eyes closed.

"Thanks.." Maggie tugged on one of her hoodie strings gently.

"Well, I've gotta go, but here's my number and the number for the Mystery Shack!" Mabel grinned, handing Maggie a piece of paper with two numbers written in sparkly purple pen on it.

"Thank you... I guess? Uh.. I'll call you later then?" Maggie asked, unsure of what to say.

"Yeah! See you later!" Mabel laughed, waving and running up the dirt path back towards the Mystery Shack.

"Oh Stan. What have you gotten yourself into." Maggie shook her head, smiling fondly at the paper. "Mabel Pines.."

Stan looked up as Mabel ran into the Mystery Shack gift shop, beaming.

"So I'm guessing you made a friend?" Stan tried to sound like he was disgusted by the word, but in actuality he was pretty happy Mabel was able to find someone who wasn't instantly afraid of her bubbly, crazy personality.

"I did indeedy." Mabel smiled. "Her name's Maggie!"

Stan's jaw dropped.

"Maggie, as in Maggie Greenfield?" he asked, wide eyed.

Mabel raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah. You know her?"

Stan sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Kid, you couldn't have chosen someone less unordinary to be friends with?" he asked, taking off his fez and rubbing his hair.

"What do you mean?" Mabel asked, tilting her head to the side. Stan sighed again, lifting an old, dusty photo from one of the shelves.

He dusted off most of it, only a bit remained on the far left side.

"That," he said, pointing to what seemed to be a skinnier, brown haired version of himself, "is me. And these two," he indicated to a blonde woman with sparkling blue eyes and a man with raven colored hair and mischievous grey eyes, "are Maggie's parents, Eleanor and James. They were adventurers, determined to figure out what was happening in Gravity Falls, when in reality it was nothing. I lost contact with them until twelve years ago, when James called me and told me they'd had a daughter, Maggie. Both of them were years younger than me, so it wasn't a surprise. But, about two years ago, they both went missing. Maggie came here after four days, saying her parents still hadn't come home, and I, being the only person she knew her parents trusted, was the first person she came to."

Mabel's jaw dropped as she thought back on what Maggie had looked like. Her wavy light brown(almost blonde) hair and her mysterious grey eyes made her look like the combination of her Mom and Dad.

"So.. she's alone?" Mabel asked sadly, looking up at Stan.

"Well, not necessarily," he said, putting the picture back up, "she's got you now, and she knows she's welcome in the Mystery Shack anytime." He ruffled his niece's hair fondly, nudging her forward. "Now get back to work. We've got merchandise to sell!"

Fear is a fickle thing. Bill said as he floated around Maggie in her dreams. It can be rational, he snapped, making the ground beneath Maggie open and swallow the screaming twelve-year-old, or completely irrational. Maggie was no longer falling, but Mabel was now looking at her in distaste.

"I can't believe I ever considered being friends with you," Dream Mabel spat, glaring at Maggie.

Maggie reached out to her helplessly, tears gathering in her grey eyes.

"Make it stop!" she cried, covering her ears as the tears fell from her eyes.

Oh in due time. But remember little puppet. Bill whispered, his triangular form slowly fading. You. Belong. To. Me.

So that was chapter one! I'm honestly just writing this for fun, so I'm not super worried if this is getting a ton of reads. But if you are reading this and you enjoyed it, leave a comment so I know, or maybe even just vote? Idk, I'm not an expert :P anyway! Chapter 2 should be out soon, as I'm almost finished with Gravity Falls itself. Until then, stay safe!!
