Our Lost Life (Itachi/Izumi fanfic)

Two Birds

"Kakashi, Itachi. May I speak with you both a moment before you leave?"

All the training in the world to block emotion and nerves still couldn't block a small chill to run up the boys' spines. They both looked up from their crouched position to the Third Hokage who sat with the Elders and Danzo. 

Shisui eyed Itachi, as Tenzo eyed Kakashi. Their friends were both worried about their fellow comrades. As each squadron left the room, the Hokage stood up to walk towards the four left in the room, "Don't worry. It is an easy request." Hiruzen's face soured a bit then saddened, "Actually, it isn't as easy as I am requesting. I know you two are waiting to leave with your teammate, but if you want, you can accompany them for me." Hiruzen waited as the other two nodded and stood next to Kakashi and Itachi, "Now, I would like this envelope delivered. Meeting dismissed." The Third Hokage handed a blank yellow envelope to Itachi as they all nodded. Before they all left, Hiruzen piped in one last message, "And Itachi, speak to me afterwards." Itachi stood up giving a slight bow and disappeared. 

"Think it will even work?" Danzo shifted in his seat and gave a deadly glare to the Hokage.

Hiruzen gazed out the window, his mind refusing to answer.

The four landed atop a roof of the genin academy. Itachi held out the envelope to inspect the seal across the edge, "No one was meant to read this since the Hokage himself wrote it out."

"I wonder what it is then? Besides, we can finish this quick mission then we need to go to the hospital to see Izumi. To catch her up on what she missed at the meeting." Shisui stood facing the great faces, his arms on his hips. "Kakashi? When will you be up there? Before or after Itachi?" He snickered turning around to the three. 

Kakashi shifted his eyes a bit to Shisui before focusing on the papers Itachi sorted through. A sharp inhale escaped through the fabric of Kakashi's mask, "Looks like we will be seeing Izumi sooner than expected."

Shisui made his way past Tenzo and Kakashi, he now peered at the folder in Itachi's hands, "What is it? Some kind of...?" His eyes read the phrase that stopped the other boys stone cold in their bodies. "That's some kind of prank right?"

Itachi read the papers over once more, "I don't quite understand either..." Itachi held out a paper with his name on it, as he finished reading, the seal on it started up in flames. He threw the paper away from himself and watched as it burned away.

Before anyone else could say anything, the boys were off towards the hospital. Each of their hearts sank deep into the acid of their stomachs. Their mouths dry, and minds unsure of what was to come.

They made their way to the doors, the folder held close to Itachi's chest as he lead the other three. He approached the front desk and made no eye contact with the receptionist as they now each had their masks promptly covering their faces. No one questioned the four as they marched down the halls knowing exactly where to go. 

They arrived at the door and pushed through, each boy taking a corner in the room around a single bed. Izumi sat up in the bed, some tubes extending from her hands that were embedded in her veins. She looked up with a smile from her textbooks that were scattered around the bed. Her hair was a bit of a mess, her bangs not tucked behind her ear as she was leaning forward reading. She used her opposite hand to tuck her bangs back and eyed the four curiously, "Meeting is done already? Normally there would be another half hour." Izumi closed a medical book and slid it down across the bed before she started to pull the blankets off. She started to twist herself out of the bed but was stopped by Itachi approaching her. With keeping his mask on, Izumi looked to the other three suspiciously, "Guys. What's goin' on here? This actually creeps me out..." She waved her right hand as the blood going through the tubes into her body started to stop. The machine beeped a few times before she pressed buttons on it to stop it.
