It was the year 1932 which meant that one of the hottest summers in the history of New York City was right around the corner, as Sammy Lawrence, the soon to be music director of Joey Drew Studios rushed through the streets of Broadway, he came along tall brick buildings, higher advertisements, a lot of theatres, cars as far as the eye can see, all in all it was a very impressive sight, but Sammy couldn't care less he already was over ten minutes late because the subways weren't working due to the heat. He didn't own a car, they became much more affordable over the past few years, but they were still only reserved for rich people, which meant they were out of reach for a young man like him who just started his first real job.
But it didn't matter how he got to the studio, he just couldn't be late, especially not at his first day of work.As he finally arrived, he covered his nervousness also always under his cold and and rather distant fassade. But since nobody seemed to care about his absence, there wasn't much to cover in the first place.
After he checked in, Sammy was introduced to Norman Polk, the projectionist of the studio, he showed him around. The older man was not very fond of the new musician, in his eyes he was way to young and inexperienced to be the director of a whole department and he wasn't even trying to cover his feelings about him.
But since they probably have to work closely together, Mr. Polk didn't make a comment about Sammy's age, he wasn't a guy who was looking for trouble after all, maybe the young man could prove that there was more to him than on first sight.
Sammy on the other hand could clearly sense Mr. Polk's despise, he wasn't sure if he'd just imagined it, because of his nervousness or if it was the truth, either way made him really uncomfortable. As they stepped out of the elevator and into the maze like halls of the music department, Sammy was impressed, he knew that the studio was big, but he didn't knew it was that huge and that was only one of the many departments of the building.
They wandered around the halls for quite some time before they ended up in a rather big orchestra room. This was more than Sammy could ever imagine, all these instruments which were scattered around the room, the recording booth on the right side and the peaceful quietness. Mr. Polk and him were standing on a little balcony, so he had a good view of the whole room."Pretty, nifty, huh?" Mr. Polk said. Sammy turned around and saw him standing next to a projector, he didn't knew what he was talking about and he couldn't care less, electronics weren't quite his thing. He continued "This little thing here is the latest projector on the market, it took me quite some time to convince Joey to buy one of these." Sammy had so many questions in mind but none of them had to do with the projectors of the studio, but since it was his first day here, he wouldn't stop him.
After his long monologue was finished, Sammy could finally ask his questions, the first ones were more general ones about the size of the concert hall, the capacity, the instruments and so on, there was just so much he had to ask, normally he'd try to restrain himself, but he was just too overwhelmed to care about what the older man was thinking about him.
Mr. Polk wasn't quite the expert when it came to music, but he could definitely answer these kind of questions. Lastly it came to the musicians, "They normally come one, or two days a month, depends on the number of musical pieces they have to go through and the difficulties. Means that you'll be mostly alone in this department."
Sammy wasn't a very outgoing kind of person, he mostly kept his thoughts to himself, so that wasn't a problem for him. Actually Sammy was relieved, even though working with other musicians was a big part of his job and it was pretty much essential to create big musical pieces, he couldn't stand the thought of people walking all over the place while he was trying to compose. He nodded "I think I can live with that."
