Isolated, since my mom left the world with tears in her dark brown eyes. Her soft blonde hair, wet, from all the sobbing. I could only hear myself breathing, while I laid my eyes on her pale white face one last time. My dad was sleeping underneath the dirt and old sod, a couple of miles away from my house, soon my mother to join him. Therefore, my mum’s wish to be at his side-once again, would be cherished.

Anytime soon I would accompany the enslaved children in an old and dark place. If I was fortuitous, a wonderful family would come rescue me from that prison.

Time would pass, finally at an age that I was old enough to fly alone in the world. It was scary, but soon enough I would become a bird myself, like my parents.

Chapter One: The Unordinary Fast Beginning to My New Life

Sitting in the nook of my room, peering out the window, I could see nothing but darkness. The wood beneath me was cold and creaked whenever I shifted my place.

When I was younger I could sit here for hours, watching small animals run through the lawn, occasionally stopping at the bird feeders to steal sunflower seeds.

Once, a small black crow sat on the ledge of my window, peering at me through the glass. His eyes were dark black, seeming as if he had no soul. Opening my window, white paint flew from it, scattering all around me and on my carpet.

The crow seemed pleasantly surprised when I reached my hand out to pet its silky, jet black feathers. As soon as my delicate fingers landed on him, it was as if I could feel his energy pulsing through my fingers, his heart thud evenly under his frail body. It was a feeling I had never felt before, as if I could see through the eyes of the bird.

It walked closer, tilting its head to examine my face. I was in awe. Needing to find out more about this energy I could feel from him, I looked through countless books about bird anatomy, but couldn't find anything describing how it felt.

One night, walking home, I saw a small hut glowing a dark purple in a corner of the now baren market. Somehow, I was drawn to it like a moth to a bug zapper. When I was close to the wooden door, I could feel the energy again, but it was different.

I could see strands of yellow, almost light looking strands, swirling around me. I marveled at the sight, knowing this energy was almost exactly like the feeling of happiness. Maybe emotions had a certain energy to them, if so, I didn't want to know what sadness felt like.

They disappeared, thinning into thin air, pulling me back into reality. My mind was running wild. This was amazing. Stepping up to the door, I could smell something inside cooking. I knocked three times, wanting to know why I was so drawn to this place.

The door opened, a white light surrounding me in the darkness of the night. A women with wrinkles staining her face, white whips of hair tied with a leather strip answered. I smiled at her, not quite showing my teeth.

"Hello… I'm Ariadne Fister," I introduced myself.

"Huh, Ariadne… I've heard that name before." She stopped, staring at me with light eyes.

"Im named after Ariadne, in Greek mythology, daughter of Pasiphae and the Cretan king Minos. She fell in love with the Athenian hero Theseus and, with a thread or glittering jewels, helped him escape the Labyrinth after he slew the Minotaur, a beast half bull and half man that Minos kept in the Labyrinth…" I could feel myself rambling on and snapped my jaw shut. She stared at me, curiosity in her eye.

"What brings you here at such a strange hour my dear?" She said sweetly.

"Well… im not completely sure." I looked down at her feet where a small black cat barreled past her ankles to smell around my lower legs. I stayed completely still, letting the cat sniff me until she was finished. The cat sat at my feet, staring up at me.
