This is a story about if Thomas had a sister, she would be a year younger than Thomas, and she entered the glade one month before him. She IS the main character, its from her POV.
There might be a love interest with a certain boy in the glade, who knows.
These chapters will be pretty short, but I'll hopefully be able to write a lot of chapters to make up for it.
"Thomas?" I ask the tiny boy who is peeking out the bedroom door. "What happening?"
The little boy scoots over to me. "Momma's talking to some people in white."
"Are they going to hurt us?" I say.
"I won't let them." He promises and hugs me.
A faint knock sounds on the wooden door.
"Can I come in?" Our mom asks.
She slips through the door and settles between the two of us, pulling us into her warmth. Smelling of spices, she embodies safety to Stephan and I, despite her recent diagnosis of the flare. Yet you can see the sadness and worry in her eyes.
"Is this about your flare mommy?" I say.
You can see the tears bubbling in her eyes as she pulls us even closer. "Yes my sweet Beth." She tells me.
"Whats happening Mommy?" Stephan questions.
"Theres some people here." She sighs. "Their from an organization that is trying to find a cure for the flare and...theyre saying you two are immune."
"We're immune?" I exclaim.
"You won't be able to get the flare." She says. "You'll get to grow up together."
Stephan flashes a small smile at me before returning his attention to our mom. "Then why are you sad mommy?" He wonders.
"Well you are going to have to go away now." She says tearfully. "Your going to go live with them."
"What? No!" Stephan exclaims.
"Mommy no!" I plead. "You cant send us away!"
You can see the inner turmoil in her eyes, as she struggles to decide what to say.
"You're going to help people." She says finally. "You'll cure the flare, and save everyone."
"We'll save you?" I ask. "And then we'll get to come home?"
"Not me honey." She says. "But you'll save other people.
"Are you going to go crazy mommy?" Stephan asks. "Like Daddy? And the people on Tv?"
She pulls us into her chest, I can feel her tears slip off her face and hit my head. "Don't worry my sweet children. You won't be around to see it."
We head into the living room, where a bunch of scientists are waiting for us, Stephan and I huddle on her lap while she and the scientists say words I don't understand. I wrap my tiny arms around my mom, soaking in the little time I have left with her.
"They'll go." She says finally. She stares down at a piece of paper they shoved at her. "On one condition. They stay together, always. They share a room, they stay in the same experiment. You cant separate them, they won't survive alone."
The scientists whisper to each other, and I catch the words 'variable' 'kill zone' 'new patterns' and different'.
"Alright." One says. "You have our word, they will stay together."
Mom nods, and kisses our heads. "I love you two so, so much. You cant even put it into words."
"I don't want to leave you." I cry, clutching her sweater with my spidery little fingers.
"Its going to be okay baby." She promises. "You look after your brother okay? You too Thomas, keep her safe."
We're taken out of her arms, and I watch her disappear behind a wall as we walk.
"Maybe we should call this one Thomas." I hear another scientist say.
We step outside and just before the door shuts, I hear a strangled sob echo through the house, a poor mother crying for her children.
I know this was short, they will be longer.
