Isn’t amazing how one random thing that happens in your life can change it forever, like being struck by lightning.

Just my luck! I have to walk home from work in a lightning storm and it’s pouring down rain. Don’t you hate it when your parents are out when you need their taxi services most?

“Kacie, are you seriously going to walk home in that? You know I could get my mum to drive you home.”

I was staring out the front windows of Hungry Jacks with an excited look plastered on my face. My friend Rachel doesn’t realise that I don’t care about getting wet or get of scared of thunder. I love lightning storms.

“Rachel you live in the other side of town. I don’t want to be a burden to your mum or you. Besides, I love lightning storms.”

“Fine, but don’t complain to me when you get a cold and your phone dies because it got wet.”

“Stop worrying Rachel. I’ll be fine.”

I walked around the back to my manager’s office. “I’m off Derek.”

He didn’t look up from his paperwork when he said, “I still agree with Rachel that you’re insane.”

“Yeah and I’m still going to walk home in that storm. Bye.”

“Bye crazy lady.”

I chuckled as I walked out the door and hugged Rachel goodbye. Then headed out the door into the last storm I will ever enjoy.

Rain pelted down on my hoodie. My jeans were already drenched. The lightning was flashing more than ever and the thunder was getting closer and louder. It was just beautiful. I really don’t get how kids can be afraid of storms, they’re soo pretty.

And then lightning struck the power pole a few metres ahead of me. Now I understand. “Well Rachel. You were right, I shouldn’t be out in this,” I muttered to myself. “Ok now I'm scared. Time to suck up to mum.”

I pulled my phone out, keeping it in my hoodie sleeve to protect it and called my mum. As I put the phone to my ear the unimaginable happened. I was struck by lightning. Everything went black.

My whole body hurt. I could feel the rain falling on my face and hear the loud cracks of thunder above me. I peeked my eyes open. I was on the ground, laying in the middle of the footpath. “How on earth did I get here?” I asked myself.

Then I remembered. “Wow. I was struck by lightning! Shouldn’t I be dead? Maybe I'm dreaming.” I pinched myself. “Ouch! Guess not then. Hmm... I better get home before mum and dad gets home and starts to worry.”
