It the winter of 1875 I was out riding making sure that everything was alright on John Tunstall's ranch. Chavez is always fussing at me to be careful but I am hard headed and stubborn today started out great and good when something scares my horse Blue and she throws and runs back to the barn I hit the ground hard hitting my head on a rock busting my head open I lay on the ground knocked from my fall Doc finds me and brings me back to the ranch and lays me in the bed and tells Chavez that he has found me and that I have been badly hurt and I may not live very long it would be a marcel if I made it through the night. Chavez sit by my bedside day and night. Chavez washed my face and forehead with a cold wash cloth and talked to me and read to me Chavez held my hand and said open your eyes Billy open your eyes Chivato open your eyes and Richard said Chavez what don't you get something to eat and get some rest Chavez said no what if he wakes up and I am not here. Chavez asked Doc if he had a mirror Doc handed Chavez a mirror Chavez looks in the mirror and says Chivato was right I can stay up all night long and still look okay and Chavez says it is funny we are suppose be made of steel and my heart is breaking I was there when that wonderful boy drifted into my life and I was there when he is going to drift out of my life no it is suppose to be like this I am suppose to go first I have always been ready to go first I am so mad I don't what to do I just want hit somebody until they feel as bad as I do I want to hit something hit it hard Dirty Steve grabs Charley and says here hit this hit Charley go a head Chavez hit him hard slap him knock his lights out Chavez. Chavez you just missed your chance half of New Mexico would give their eye teeth to take a hit at Charley. Charley gets mad and leaves Dirty Steve goes to find Charley Chavez says I am sorry for acting like that Doc says laughter through tears is my favorite feeling Chavez says I should have one those break downs more often Richard would be so pleased Dirty Steve and Charley comes back and Doc says it is nice to see that you two had made up Dirty Steve says Charley can't stay mad at me he worships the quick sand that I walk on. John calls Chavez and tells him that I was awake and that I had made it through the night but I still needed to rest. Chavez and I are brothers and that will never change even when the
