Work and College

"I'm home" she mumbled while walking through the excessively ample apartment door, no one answered. A very typical night ever since I turned 14. Mom would always leave the house and dad was always too busy at work. Dad would go to work at the crack of dawn and would be back just before sun-down so we'd have enough to pay utilities and stuff. I on the other hand have graduated high school and work a part time job while still taking time to study for college. It's been tough at home, hardly making enough to live. Ever since mom and dad began fighting things just changed for the worse. Dad comes home and goes straight to expanding his knowledge and like I said before, mom's never home. I tried to be the glue that held them together but overtime even glue can't keep things together.

"Aughh!" Dad snarled as he slammed his fist down next to the keyboard. "I didn't get the job.." He turned towards me at the back of the office with a book. "Trying to become a better businessman at home won't grant you a bachelor's degree.". "I need to somehow manage to find a better paying job so we can keep living. I don't want you to look down on me for not being able to take care of you." His eyes fell to the floor and his head hung low. "Dad, keep trying and I'll apply for colleges. I'll keep us off the streets and give you the break you need. You're always so busy, why don't you lay down for the night." I helped him up and took him to the room. "But I really should keep applying for jobs, we're digging our graves if I don't.". "Give it a rest dad! You're 52, you're getting older and it'll become harder and harder as you get older. Just leave it to me." Sighing, I left the room and quietly shut the door. "Please rest up." I muttered through the door and headed back into the office. I searched up colleges and found several highly ranked school. "Whoa." I gawked while looking into them. Looking around first I mumbled to myself, "There's no way, but it won't hurt to try." I applied to one prestigious school after another, then finding myself applying for community colleges. Thinking briefly, "It's the only thing I can really do at this point.". I shut everything off and quietly headed back to my room, the clock reading 4:26 AM. I changed and laid down before comfortable falling asleep.

"BEEP..BEEP..BEEP..BEEP..BEEP." My alarm clock sounded. It was 8:30 AM and I had to get ready for work. I groggily got out of bed to head to the bathroom to get ready. Washing my face, brushing my teeth, my hair, and looking into the mirror to only look away with a bit of sadness. "Another day another struggle." I groan on the way out of the bathroom. Dad's already gone at work, probably thinking "If my daughter could, I can too.". He's too hard headed when it comes to work.

I quickly got dressed and headed out, locking the door behind me. Rushing down I unlock my bike for the rack and begin my ordinarily mundane trip to work. The ride consisted of lots of the familiars saying "Good morning!" and a few "Be careful.". Wasn't the worst way to start a morning but not my kind of thing. Mornings became the worst part of the day, waking up to a lot of disappointment when I would find out mom didn't make it home the night before. Seeing or hearing from mom was a difficult thing to do these days. She doesn't call, text, video chat; let alone come home to see me during holidays. Endless and pointless fight.

I arrived at work and locked my bike up in the back before walking in. "Morning guys." I casually say while walking to the crew room. "Hey, you're here early!" My coworker Young-Min beams. I check the clock hanging on the wall. "Oh, yeah. I actually am." I give out a small smile. Getting to work was also an everyday struggle, it's easy but difficult when you've got little motivation for anything. Young-Min came in and took a seat on the bench. "You look a bit rough, should we go for drinks when our shifts are over?" He smiled. "I work part time and you're full time. I'd be here for a couple extra hours just waiting for you.". "Ah, guess you have a point". He ruffled his hair in the back. I look in the mirror and fix my clothing to look neat and well kept. "Time to clock in, Seo-Yeon." Young-Min stood tall and walked out. He's not a bad guy but his intentions sure aren't good, maybe it's just me.
