"Sir, all the guards have been posted to their proper stations." Dolan, the trusted knight to the royal family, reports to the king. He nods, "Thank you, you have always been very competent. You may retreat to your quarters once you do one more thing for me." Dolan lowers his head to his ruler and kneels down. "Of course sir, anything." The king speaks with a low tone. "Please check up on my son." On the inside, Dolan curses quite intensively. That prince is the biggest royal pain. Despite how he feels on the inside, he must answer to the one he serves. "Yes sir. Did he run from his duties yet again?" The king stifled a laugh. He knew that his son was quite the handful, though he tried his best to be patient. "He did indeed. So please, if you'll make sure he isn't destroying anything or trying to sneak out again, if appreciate it." Dolan stood up from his kneeling position and bowed his head. "Of course sir, right away. Goodnight your majesty."
So, Dolan headed to his royal highnesses chamber. He knocked swiftly on the door. He almost immediately got a response, "Go away father! I do not wish to speak to you." Dolan rolled his eyes. "Well, it's a good thing I am not him." Dolan was a lot less formal when speaking to the prince. In fact, it seemed the more casual he was, the better he was able to communicate with him. The door opened to reveal an angry Prince Harrison. "Oh...it's you." He used a much calmer tone when speaking to his knight. He was still a royal brat but not quite as bad with Dolan. "Whatever my father told you to do to change my mind, it's not going to work." He marched back to his bed and flopped down. Dolan stepped inside and closed the door. "Your highness, your father only asked me to check up on you. I know nothing of your argument with him." Harrison sat up, "Father didn't tell you?" He looked down and scoffed. "Of course he didn't." Dolan came and kneeled in front of the bed. "You know I will always be here for you your highness, but until your coronation, your fathers word is final." Harrison scoffed, "You-" but before he could speak, Dolan held his hand up. "If I may, even if your father gets the last word, I will always be by your side. So if there's any task you cannot handle, I'll be here to help you." Harrison sighed and sat up. "Even if I'm a pain in your ass?" He laughs. "Language." Dolan scolds and Harrison rolls his eyes. "I'm 17 years old!" Dolan speaks in a calm but strict tone, "True, but it isn't proper for the future king to speak with such a tongue. As least not in public." The prince flops back down on the bed and looks up at his knight "...my father wants me to choose a wife." He mumbles. This isn't a shock to Dolan, it's common for royalty to wed at a fairly young age. "And you don't want to." He says more as a statement than a question. Harrison shrugs, "I mean I do want to get married someday but I want to choose who I spend the rest of my life with. I know it's traditional for royals to have an arranged marriage to another royal but...I want to marry someone I love." Dolan looks at Harrison for a moment. His eyes seem to have a certain depth in them. After thinking for a second, he has a sudden realization. "Your highness...is there someone that you have romantic feelings for? Someone you love?" Almost instantly, the princes face flushes brightly. "No! Of course not. It would be improper to have such feelings for someone I cannot marry." Dolan rolls his eyes and looks down at the floor. "Alright...Harrison." When Dolan used the princes name instead of a title, his head shot up. "Not as your knight but as your friend...you can tell me. Do you love someone." Harrison sighed heavily and opened his mouth. Instead of speaking, he leaned forward and pressed his lips flush against Dolan's. The knights eyes widened as Harrison pulled away. "Your highness!" Harrison sighed and looked down. "You." He spoke very softly. "I love you."
Dolan sat, astonished. "But I am your knight? What makes you love me?" The boy shrugged, "You always protect me, you're nice to me, you take care of me...you make me feel happy. Plus you're attractive which is a large bonus." Dolan laughs, "that's very kind of you your highness. However you know, as a knight serving in your family, I cannot become your suitor." Harrison sat up and looked down. "I know. Can you do one thing for me. Please?" Dolan bowed his head. "Of course, I would do anything for you, my prince." Harrison visibly gulped, "Will you stay with me tonight? Grant me one night with the one I really love, before I sign away my life?" He weighed the pros and cons before finally agreeing. "Alright your majesty. I will stay with you this once." Dolan stood and locked the door. "Does his highness wish for privacy while he dresses for bed?" Harrison blushes and shakes his head. "No, that's alright." The knight nods and strips himself of his leather armor, leaving him in his black under shirt and pants that he sleeps in. He folds up his clothes and places them by the door. Then turns to look at Harrison who has fully stripped down to his undergarments. He quickly slips on his night shirt and pants. Dolan dims the lights and lays down by his side. He ends up getting in a position where he is spooning his highness. He uses the claim that it's "safer" because "he can protect him better this way." It didn't matter what the excuse was, Harrison was happy. Genuinely very happy for once in his life. Everything seemed absolutely perfect in that moment. Nothing could ruin their one beautiful night together...or so they thought.

Harrison awoke in the middle of the night due to screaming coming from outside his window. At first, he thought people were arguing but when he heard the clank of metal and saw his knight, as well as his armor was gone, he immediately knew what was happening. There was an invasion. He immediately dressed himself and rushed out of his room, sprinting down the hall as fast as he could when-CRASH! He slammed right into one of the lower ranked knights. He immediately began apologizing. "Your highness, I am so sorry! ..Wait a minute, you should be on your way out to the safe house, quickly we must hurry and get you to your horse!" The knight grabbed Harrison's hand and pulled him to the stable. "Your father is already on his way there, please hurry and get to safety. We will inform you when it is safe to return." Before Harrison had anytime to process what was happening, the horse took off running at light speed. As the horse was leaving the castle, Harrison swore he caught a glimpse of several fallen soldiers. Tears left his eyes as he rode off. What was happening to his home? What would he do? And most importantly...was Dolan okay.

Several days had passed and there had been no word from anyone in the kingdom. Both the King and the Prince had grown impatient. They were getting antsy, doing nothing but wait. Finally, there was a knock on their door. The king went to answer it and Harrison watched from behind. It was the knight that had taken Harrison to his horse. "Your majesty," he started. "I bring news from the castle. It is now safe to return home." Both the royals were ecstatic, however it was indeed too soon. "Unfortunately, we were not able to save everyone. They fought valiantly and their lives were not lost in vain. Here is the list of the fallen..." he tuned to Harrison. "...and your highness, this is for you." He handed him a note scribbled out messily on parchment. He recognized the handwriting immediately. It's from Dolan. He took it and thanked the knight. He rushed to his room and read it to himself excitedly. But his face slowly fell as he moved down the page.
The letter read:
Harrison,
If you're reading this than it means I have lost my life in battle, protecting you. I hope you don't shed tears for my death, you always have been so dramatic. Please remember me in good light and try to do as your told. Don't cause too many problems without me there to guide you. Now that I am gone, there is something I wish to tell you. I love you. I love you more than I should but I can't hold it back any longer. I'm sure you are to be married soon and it hurts me, but I know you will be a great ruler. Smile bright my highness.
               -Your knight, Dolan
Tears fell heavily from Harrison's cheeks along with broken sobs. "He loves me...and now he's gone." Harrison started to shake in an overwhelming feeling of despair. "He's gone! Why?!" He screamed into his bedsheets. "Why did someone take him away from me?! No!" Harrison's heart had shattered into a thousand pieces. His one true love had been taken away. Once his tears dried, all that was left was an empty hole. "I will never love again."

***Optional epilogue***

The year was 1893. It had been 10 years since the death of Harrison's past love and knight, Dolan Magee. For the first year, Harrison shut himself away and wouldn't speak to anyone. But when the news that his father was sick came, he finally emerged so he could spend his last days with him. The next several years were spent learning how to become a proper king and rule his country.
Harrison was now 28 years old with a wife and two children. Although his first love could never be replaced, he loved his wife very much. Even still, Harrison often looked upon Dolan's letter to him to keep him in his memory and in his heart. His father had been buried next to Dolan. They were the first two people that Harrison truly loved.
For the 10 year anniversary of Dolan's passing, today was especially hard. He was visiting Dolan's grave with his wife and children. However, she and the kids agreed to give him some alone time with his past lover. She took her children to the flower stand nearby while they waited.
Harrison stood in front of the grave with tears in his eyes. "Hey Dolan. I can't believe it's been ten years since you left me. Oh don't worry, I know what you're going to say. 'Don't cry Harrison, it's not proper.'" He let out a sad laugh. As he spoke he got more choked up, "I hope you're proud of me Dolan. I did what you asked. It was hard at first but I...I hope I've become a ruler you'd be proud of. I love you my darling." Harrison kissed his hand an pressed it into the grave stone with the name 'Dolan Magee' carved into it. He turned and joined his wife and children by the flower stand.
"Hm...I am proud, my love." Dolan sat on his own grave stone with big white wings.
"I certainly am."
