I grip tighter onto my crowbar. I can feel my heart beating, like any second it's going to rip out of my chest.
Jeremiah turns around to us and puts a finger to his lips, telling us to stay quiet. He looks at Raina then points at Lacey, and nods, telling her to keep her quiet. He climbs out of the cellar quickly, as the rest of us do one by one.
I'm the last one out and all the others except my dad have already started moving. He grabs my arm and pulls me along. We start running with the others, trying to be as quiet as possible. I look around I only see a few lone Dead at a pretty far distance from us.
My dad and I catch up with the rest of the group and I see Lacey keeps looking around frantically, and almost tripping over her own feet. The group starts to slow and Jeremiah looks around for a moment, then takes off again.
We just keep going, still staying quiet. I start to think everything is going to be okay, and just then, Lacey trips. She hits the ground pretty hard and dizzily tries to get back up, just to fall back down again.
"Get UP!" yells Raina.
In a loud whisper Jeremiah says, "Hey! Shut it. The last thing we need is those things seeing-" he gets cut off by the growling sound of the Dead. His eyes get wide and he looks around.
One. Just one Dead, walking at us slowly.
"It's just one. We can ignore it," says Jeremiah.
"It's too loud. It'll attract others. We can't leave it there." whispers Tara.
"She's right," says Ronnie, walking toward the Dead.
Damon follows. As they get closer to the Dead it starts moving faster and getting louder. Ronnie raises his axe and swings it at the Dead's head. It immediately falls to the ground, but still making noises. Damon and Ronnie swing at it repeatedly until there's silence.
They get back with the group, and Jeremiah points us in the right direction. We run again, for only about a minute and I see we're back on the road.
I look around. No Dead that I can see.
"What are we doing back here? Did you not remember the reason why we LEFT?" says Jack.
"Well I don't know about you, but I'd think our best chances of finding a car would be on the road," says Jeremiah.
Jack just shakes his head and looks away.
"Auntie Tara, I want to leave," says Nathan. It makes me sad just to think what him and Hope must be feeling, going through all of this so young.
She sighs and says, "It's okay, we're going to just find a car. Trust me, it'll be better once we do. Auntie Tara won't have to carry you everywhere. My arms feel like they're going to fall off," she says laughing. Nathan smiles.
Jeremiah nods his head toward the road. "Let's go. If anything goes wrong, we run into the forest. Staying together. Everyone keep it at a whisper," he says.
We start walking down the road and Jack comes down next to me.
"So, your step mama turned? You didn't seem very upset," he says.
"Well, we didn't have the best relationship," I said, still feeling guilty about not being sad about her death.
"Still thought there'd be somethin'. You Dad and real mama get a divorce?" he asked.
