“I love her so much. I don’t know why she is treating me this way.” I said, worried that she would leave me someday.
“Maybe you should leave her and find someone better. These girls no longer want love. All they are looking for is money.” Mike said. Mike was my best friend and knew almost all my secrets as I knew his. We’ve been friends from our university days. He has a barbing store which he uses to get income as he still kept looking for a better job. I was working as a teacher in one private school in Warri. I wasn’t paid much but at least, it was still better than nothing. I was currently dating Sonia who was helping her mother watch her boutique. We’ve been dating for almost a year. She has been acting a bit strange for some days and I wasn’t ready to breakup with her soon. I just saw it as one of those times in a relationship when the couples have slight disagreement. Although, I couldn’t really tell what our disagreement was about.
As Mike and I kept on talking, my phone rang. It was Sonia. I quickly picked the call. “Sonia, how are you dear?” I asked.
“I am fine. Are you at home?” she asked. “I want to come over to discuss something with you.” she added. I agreed for her to come.
“Bro, I have told you the best decision. Just end things with her now that your parents are not aware about the relationship. Every month, we will be settling argument as if we are handling court case.” Mike said. “I think I should be going home now before your baby comes. That girl with her wahala.” he added as he got up from the chair and walked towards the door. I followed behind. “Bro, call me when you get home.” I said as I closed the door behind him.Moments later, Sonia arrived. “Sonia, welcome. So what can I offer you?” I asked.
“Nothing. I just came for us to talk.”
“Talk about what?” I asked. She walked up to where I stood and looked straight into my eyes. “Stanley, I am tired.” She said.
“I know you must be tired. Let me get you something to eat so that you can gain your strength back.”
“Stan, you know what I mean. Don’t start acting funny.” I already knew where she was going to with the conversation but I just wasn’t ready to accept. “But you know how much I love you and that I can’t live without you. Please, don’t do this to me.” I said as I held her hands begging.
“See, I don’t love you anymore. I love someone else.”
“Since when?”
“It doesn’t matter.” she replied.
“If this is how you want it, then no problem. I still want you to know that I still love you and would do anything to get you back.” I said. She picked up her bag and walked out. I sat down on the floor feeling like the world didn’t love me. I wanted to get wasted but I had no alcohol in the house so I just sat down and cried myself to sleep.
Months had gone by and finally, we settled. We were dating again and this time, the love was stronger.
One faithful afternoon as I was heading home after school, I decided to stop at Fantazia, one of the eatery along the road to get myself something light to eat. As I parked my car, I saw Sonia with my friend Mike inside the restaurant. I was still in my car so they couldn’t see me as they were busy feeding themselves. I knew Mike hated Sonia so much which got me thinking. “What exactly are they doing together?” I said to myself in the car. I came down and walked in to approach them. “Mike, what are you doing here with Sonia?” I asked. They both looked at me like they’ve seen a ghost at first. “I knew you will finally walk in.” Mike said smiling. “What do you mean?” I asked. “I actually came here to get some doughnuts when I saw Sonia sitting here so I came to greet her. I saw you driving in and decided to prank you. So did we get you?” Mike always loved pranking people but this one really shocked me. I looked at Sonia and she was just laughing. She got up and kissed me. “Mike, he fell for it. Just look at his face.” she said as she placed her arms around my neck. “Yes, you guys got me, but please don’t play this kind of prank with me again. I don’t like it.” I said as I joined them. We all left together and as I was the only one that owned a car, I decided to drop them at their places. “So Mike, you didn’t tell me that you and Sonia are now friends.” I said. “Well, we’ve decided to put our differences behind.” Mike replied. Well, there was not much I could say about the issue so we changed the conversation as I kept driving. Later that evening, I got dressed to go for a church all-night programme. I wasn’t really that righteous but praise night is not something that I would love to miss. I had invited Sonia. She told me she would meet me at the church and call me when she gets there. My Buddy, Mike was not really a church person so I didn’t even bother telling him about the programme. On my way going, I just decide to drop by Sonia’s place to check if she was home. She won’t have to waste extra transport.I got to her doorstep and was about to knock when I saw that she had a male visitor. It was 9:30pm in the evening. I knocked at the door just after checking my watch. “Who is it?” she said. I didn’t respond until she opened the door. She was surprised to see me. “Baby, I hope you are still coming for the programme?” I asked ignoring the shoe I saw outside and walked in as she still stood at the door looking at me. “What is it?” I asked.
“Nothing. You didn’t call that you were coming.” she replied. “I didn’t really have it in mind to come. As I was passingby, I just decided to check if you were home.” “Baby, have the visitor gone?” the voice came from the passage. It was definitely a man’s voice. I quietly waited as he walked into the sitting room. “What!” I screamed. “Bro, it is not what you think.” it was Mike who was putting on only his underwear. Looking at him alone and the expression from Sonia’s face, it was definitely what I was thinking. “Mike, so this is what you have been doing?” I asked. “Bro, I didn’t mean to do this. I promise, it won’t happen again.”
“But it has already happened. So this was why you always wanted us to break up?”
“Bro, I am really sorry. I don’t really know what to say. We can settle this.”
“I just have only one question.” I said as I looked at them.
“Stan, you already know the answer to the question so no need to ask.” Sonia said as she faced the floor. She couldn’t look me in the face.
“I want to hear the answer. How long have you two ben doing this?” I asked. They kept quiet and couldn’t say a word until Sonia gathered the courage to speak. “Stan, the thing is…”I quickly stopped Sonia before she could say another word. I didn’t want to hear explanations, I just wanted to know how long they’ve been deceiving me.
“I have a programme to go to. You can go back to whatever you were doing.” I said before walking out of the house. I just could not imagine that my own best friend could stab me and still pretend to treat my wounds for so long.
