I look out on the view from the rooftop bar, the city shines bright. Trying to block out the noises from the city and the music that's blasting in the background. Some people yell loudly, while others mumbles into their alcohol. I feel the breeze of the wind hitting slightly against my skin, it's still a little cold outside on a late april afternoon.
I can't believe I agreed on going out on a weekday with Kayla, I should be studying for my exams, which is this Friday, yet here I am. I'm not the type that usually goes out like this, I'm more of the stay in kind. Movie nights or reading a good book and eating good food is what I prefer, some may call it boring.
Nervousness overcomes me as Oliver is crossing my mind. Why did I think this was a good idea? He is going to be furious with me and start a stupid fight about how irresponsible and careless I am for doing this.
Oliver and I have been together since five years back, this summer is going to be our sixth year. We've had our ups and downs, but we have managed to get through it.
"Hannah, are you listening?"
"Huh? Oh sorry, I didn't hear you, what did you say?" I say as I turn my head towards Kayla who's sitting next to me.
"Is everything okay? You look distant." She laughs.
"I'm fine, just a little tired I guess." I decide to go with that for now.
"Okay. So I was telling you about this guy I've been on and off with. We have been texting all day, but I want something more than just texting now."
"Yeah? What's his name?" I smile as I ask her.
"Leo. We went to the same high school. I had a major crush on him back then. What should I do? Should I ask him out?"
"Of course you should do that. You've got nothing to lose." I chew on my straw and wink at her.
"I don't know Han... Maybe I should just leave it like that." Kayla says looking hesitant.
"Kayla do it, or else I will take your phone and write something myself." I demanded.
"Alright, I'll do it." She says and starts typing on her phone. "What if he won't answer, what if he leaves it as seen?" She looks up at me with an anxious expression on her face.
"He won't, he'll answer you. Just wait and see." I say trying to convince her.
"Okay." She says and clicks on send. "I need another drink, do you want one?" Kayla says and puts her phone on the table as she's about to leave towards the bar.
"No thank you, I'll stay with my virgin strawberry mojito." I reply with a smile.
Kayla is one of my best friends, we've known each other for one year now, and she has chosen today of all days to go out and just burst her heart out. Kayla is kind of an introvert and not that good at talking to people. Sometimes she's unpredictable, it makes it hard for me to understand what she wants or what she's thinking. Kayla has brown big eyes, beautiful dark curly hair and pale skin. I'm four years older than her. We're like night and day, the looks, attitude, and personality wise, but we're as close as sisters. Sometimes we do fight like we're related.
"What is taking her so long." I murmur to myself as I gaze at the phone on the table which is lighting up and vibrates as someone is texting Kayla constantly. Could that be Leo? I take a closer look at the screen and see another name "Jordan." Who's he and why is he texting that much to Kayla.
As I reach out my hand to take the phone to discover more Kayla comes and takes it out of my hand. "Has he replied?" She looks at me with a smile and then back at the phone.
"Oh my Hannah, I can't freaking believe it. He wrote back, he said yes! I can't believe I got a date with Leo this Friday!" Kayla squeals about the text that graced itself upon her.
"I told you so." I giggled at her excitement. I'm still a little curious on who that Jordan is and why was he texting her non stop. She'll tell me when the right time comes.
Kayla leaned against the seat next to mine, still daydreaming about her long-time crush. "It's too overwhelming. It's been three years and when I finally got the nerve to ask him out, he doesn't brush me off!"
I smile at that, sipping on my drink. However, my good mood dropped as soon as I saw who was calling me. It's Oliver, I take my phone quickly with my heart beating out of my chest and answer it.
"Hello." I answer.
"Hey Hannah, where are you? I went to your place but you weren't there." Oliver says.
"I.. well I am with Kayla, we're out eating." That's not exactly a lie, but not the truth either.
"Oh okay, I came to surprise you with some dinner, thought you'd be hungry after being all locked up studying for your test." He sounds surprised.
"Well yeah, I got a little hungry and Kayla came so we decided to eat out." I say as I look at Kayla who looked confused at me.
"Okay, good that you're eating, when will you be back? Maybe we can watch a movie later?"
"Like tonight?" I ask.
"Yes. Tonight, if you have time." He answers.
"Um, I'm not sure if it works tonight, I'm a little tired right now. Also we got the whole weekend together." I say as a compromise.
"Aha yeah okay," he sounds disappointed. "I'll talk to you later then, love you," he says and before I get the chance to say something he ends the call.
"You've got to be kidding me!" I groan to myself.
Sometimes the way Oliver is acting and the way he is irritates me. He didn't do or say anything wrong, but I'm just tired of being the perfect girlfriend that he has pictured up in his head, I feel like a failure or mean every time I need to decline or tell him that I can't. I feel like he doesn't understand that I need this sometimes without him being so judgmental.
I'm starting to sound grumpy, maybe it's because I'm just getting tired right now or maybe I'm stressed over the test that is on this Friday.
