I woke up to the sound of birds singing outside.I checked my watch, 6:00 AM?! I definitely needed more sleep. An hour later I felt a bit better.I ate my breakfast, pulled on a comfortable shirt and sweater, put on some jeans and my converse, and left the house. As I walked to my bus stop, I looked around. The birds in the trees looked so happy, I wondered what it would be like to be able to fly freely wherever I wanted to.

When I arrived at school I strode along the hallways, and to my classroom carefully observing my surroundings.

“Hey Lisa!” My best friend Jennifer came over and pulled me in for a hug.

“Awww,I missed you so much during summer break.” I half-cried.

“Yeah,I missed you too.” Jennifer said in a sad tone of voice. We went into our classroom and sat down. “Hey guys!” I turned around to see who it was and I was instantly happy.

“Mia!!!” I started running toward my best friend.

“Lisa!” We ended up in a tight hug. My name was actually Elizabeth, but everyone just called me Lisa. “Awww are you having huggie time?” I didn’t have to look to know who was speaking,Serena.

“There’s no need to be jealous, even if you don’t have any friends.” I replied to her stupid comment.

“Actually I have about ten times more friends than you...” She hissed back at me.

“Yeah, true,” I said softly, “on facebook.” Jen and Mia laughed.

“Yeah Elizabeth Stevens, whatever you say...” I turned back to my friends.“She just doesn't have a sense of humor.” I whispered, smiling.

“Of course not,” Jen giggled, “She’s Serena, we should be used to it.”  We giggled and turned to go to class.

After school I felt tired, but happy to go home. During the ride I was lost in deep thoughts and was shocked when the bus pulled to a halt. I gathered my belongings and got off. As I wandered on my usual path I saw a few strange looking guys lingering along the alley which I crossed everyday to get home.

“Hey,you!” One of them shouted.

“M-m-me?” I asked stuttering,my body starting to fill with fear.

“Yeah. You got any money?” He came closer his dark blue eyes fixed on mine.

“N-no.” I managed to mumble

“Are you sure about that?” He asked fiercely, pushing me.

“Yes.I am completely sure.” I answered, trying to sound strong, even though on the inside I felt like an ant about to be crushed my someone’s foot.

“Oh yeah?” He questioned angrily, pushing me once again, making me feel weak and lost.

“I-I-I yes.” Is all I managed to say before I made a run for it. I saw my chance and grabbed it. I ran fast, dodging one of his companions that tried to get hold of me. I ran faster and faster, never looking back. I wasn’t in control of my body any more, the fear had taken over. After running for what seemed like hours I finally stopped in front of my house, looking around making extremely sure that no one was there. I entered the house, slammed the door shut, and ran upstairs. I threw myself on my bed  and tried to calm down. I was breathing heavily and my lungs ached at every breath.

***

The next morning it took me a while until I gathered the courage to leave the house. The memory of what happened yesterday still haunted my thoughts. I couldn't deny it, I was scared.
