Early January
Devin
It only took one trip to get my stuff upstairs, considering I didn't have much to begin with. I took the bedroom farthest to the north. The room was small, unfamiliar. The grey worn out carpeting, the wooden walls, the peeked white ceiling, the brown laced curtains around the window — these were all new to me. Pictures and portraits of the old family that used to live here still inhabits the walls.
There was only one small bathroom downstairs, which I would have to share with my parents. I used to have my own bathroom. I was already missing my old home. I was trying not to dwell on it too much though. The real issue that I was soon to come to grips with was the new life or "a fresh start" as my dad puts it. Dropping everything and moving to a new place in the middle of school semester wasn't going to be easy.
With no friends and not knowing a single person in this godforsaken place — I would be diving head first into a pool without water. I could already feel the grip on my chest tighten at the thought.
Tomorrow was going to be utter hell, I knew that going in. I would be the new kid, that's never a good thing. Maybe I could try to blend in, but do I really want to be the invisible kid who gets lost in the crowd and forgotten about?
I certainly don't want to be the kid that stands out — the freak. When I finished putting my clothes in the dresser, I head for the bathroom to clean myself up after a long days travel.
I look at my face in the mirror. Albino-skinned complexion, obviously not an athlete unlike most boys my age — blue eyes with a tint of purple or perhaps violet and hair painted black. In all definition I guess I'd be classified or labeled as "emo". Or so I was in my old school.
Maybe tomorrow won't be so bad, this could be a learning experience, one that will help shape and form me into the man I am meant to be. At least that's what I tell myself. I'm reasonably sure that it's just an excuse to cover my anxiety.
The day turned to night only I was having a hard time making my brain shut up long enough to fall asleep. Thoughts kept me awake, thoughts of tomorrow.
What if everything goes wrong? There were so many scenarios playing in the back of my head it was driving me crazy. I just had to stop thinking all together. But how was I to do that? I needed to settle my nerves.* * *
The next morning I awake bright and early to the sound of buzzing in my ears. I reached out my arm where the alarm sits on my nightstand and shut it off then I hide back under the covers — refusing to make my presence known.
I'd much rather stay here in my warm bed without a care in the world or a single distressing thought. A lot easier said than done when you have nagging parents that don't want you to be late for your first day. I groan at the sound of my mother's voice coming from downstairs.
Breakfast was uneventful as my mom simply wished me luck. I thanked her knowing I could use all the luck I could get. I follow my dad over to the car.
It was like sixty degrees, the sky perfect, cloudless. It was rather nice out for this time of year. I was wearing a plain shirt — sleeveless, black. My wardrobe usually consisted of a hoodie.
The drive was basically silent apart from my father giving me some friendly tips on how to act in a new school.
I was anxious filled with apprehension as we neared the parking lot. We stopped in front of the building. My dad told me to have fun and make friends, I felt like I was in kindergarten all over again.
I took a deep breath before opening the door. I head to the principal's office inside, the room was small; a little waiting area with chairs, carpet and a clock ticking the time away. There was a desk and behind it a guy with a suit.
The balding man looked up at me. "Who are you?"
"Oh... I'm Devin Duvet," I told him. "I'm new here."
"Oh so your the new kid, your father informed me you were coming." He laughed. He opened his desk drawer and pulled out a document. "Here's your schedule, map of the school and the combination to your locker." I took the papers and mouthed a thank you before walking off.
I looked at the map and my schedule, trying my best to memorize it. While I was walking I wasn't watching where I was going and ended up falling on my to the ground with a loud thud.
I was expecting an insult like "watch where your going faggot" like where I used to live but it never came. I stare up in confusion. "Oh my God I'm so sorry are you okay?!"
Before I could respond he's fumbling around trying to pick up my fallen items. "I... Uh." He sticks out his hand and helps me up before giving me my stuff.
He extends his hand for me to shake. "I'm Jordan your new right?"
Wow did everyone know I was coming? "Uh... Yeah," I shake his hand. "Devin, nice to meet you."
Just then the bell rings signalling us to get to class. "Well it was nice meeting you see ya later Dev." He says running off and waving goodbye.
The classroom was average sized. The students all stopped what they were doing when they saw me. Not at all the response I wanted. The teacher sent me to an empty desk in the back after introducing me and encouraging the class to help make me feel comfortable and welcomed. Even if I was in the back I still managed to get stares from the class. I kept my head down eyeing the wooden desk in front of me.When the bell rang, I got up and was immediately approached by a familiar face. His hair, different shades of dyed green making him stand out.
"Hey Dev."
"Hey um... Jordan right?"
"Yeah, hey when's your next class?" He asked.
I check my schedule. "Um, history."
He looks excited. "Hey that's my next class to c'mon I'll show you the way!"
"Thanks." I give him a small smile.
The rest of the morning I spent with Jordan as he showed me around. The more time I spent with him, the more I got to know him. He became my first friend and he was a pretty cool guy, a little hyper but he was nice.
We walked to the cafeteria for lunch. But as we approach I noticed something or someone who caught my attention. Behind a matted layer of cream-colored hair hid a pair of the most gorgeous emerald green eyes I had ever seen.
He wore a torn up pair of blue jeans and a baggy oversized maroon hoodie.Curiously I wonder why he's wearing a hoodie when it's so nice out. Maybe that's his style? He plays with the food on his tray using his fork
"Devin I'd like you to meet my friend Gage, Gage this is the new kid I was telling you about."
He looks up but quickly looks back down. I make myself comfortable beside him while Jordan takes a seat across from us. I noticed Gage barely touched his food, he must not be all that hungry.
He seems lost in his own little world, like he's detached meanwhile Jordan is running his mouth about god only knows what.
I keep my eyes focused on the shy, scared blond beside me, who has given up on messing with his food and is now playing with the hem of his sleeves.
"Don't you agree?" I'm snapped from my gaze at the sudden question.
"Wait what?" I ask oblivious. I feel a bit guilty for ignoring what he was saying.
"I said we're all going to be great friends don't you agree?"
I nod in response. I look back at Gage who has a sly smile playing at his lips, perhaps amused by my stupidity. The bell rings, informing us that lunch is over.
I don't see Gage again until the end of school when I noticed the two standing near the building. They were talking, well Jordan was but stopped when he saw me causing his eyes to light up. He reached his hand up, waving at me —ushering me to come towards them.
"Devin!" He cheers. I smirk and cough awkwardly, awarding me another world famous sly smile from Gage. I seem to be rather amusing to him. I don't know weather to be offended or pleased.
"You guys wanna hang out at my place?!" I wince at the squeaky high pitched voice.
"Can't I have to head straight home..." It was the first time I had heard Gage speak and his tone was small but sweet."What about you Devin?"
"Sure, beats going home and unpacking." I say nonchalantly.
"Yeah!" He cheered. We all walk towards Jordans house but Gage heads in the opposite direction about halfway there. I was a little disappointed he couldn't hang out with us.
Mere minutes we are entering his house. He eases the door closed just as I heard a girl's voice. "Jordan is that you?" Her eyes widen upon seeing us. "Jordan who's this?"
"This is my friend Devin, he's new here! I met him today at school!" I had never met anyone with so much energy. It's as if he'd never grown past the age of being a kid, still boisterous as ever. He must be quite a handful on his parents.
"This is my sister Lidia."
Hair, long past her shoulders it's black like mine but with blue highlights. She also had the same style in clothing though she shared the deep chocolate brown eyes resembling that of her brothers.
"Cute friend." She states.
I can feel her eyeing me as if I were a piece of meat. I must admit she was pretty cute you know for a girl, but she's not my type. I felt a hand grab hold of my wrist and before I knew it I'm being dragged upstairs.
"Damn Jordan chill out before you rip off my hand." I laugh as we enter his room.
"Sorry." He lets go of me, his face flushed from embarrassment. "Oh hey wanna see my video games?!" He really is a child it's adorable even he was annoying. It was kind of like having a brother which I guess is okay. Maybe this place wasn't so bad after all.
