My life started out a little differently than yours probably did. A world of humans, peppered with a few advanced humans. No one knows how it happened. All i know is that they hunt us, the humans.
Oh, where are my manors? My name is Anna. Or at least today is. I am on the run a lot, so i do my best to change my name as i go along. Yesterday i was Emily. And the day before that i was Amanda. I dont really like the Girly names, but Sipher likes them.
Sipher is my guardian. She has taken care of me sense my mom and dad were hunted and gunned down by humans. Hunters. I shiver every time i think about them.
But let me finish explaining, im an avian-human. For some reason, my family started producing babies with wings, and they could fly after a while. My mom use to tell me that my wings were the prettiest she ever saw. Creamy white with almost lavender colored dots.
I can barely remember my mom. Or my dad. I was only 7 when the hunters found us in Nevada. Dad died first, and mom flew me away. My wings weren't ready to fly yet, but i was learning. They found us again in New York City. In the space between some apartment buildings is where i watched from some boxes as the hunters held my mom down and cut her wings off. She bled out with feathers and blood everywhere.
The only reason I've survived the 9 years after is because Sipher found me in those boxes. Sipher is a canine-human. Meaning that she is part dog. She has a tail, fuzzy little thing it is, and her hearing, sight, and sense of smell is highly developed. I swear her nose is better than a blood hound's.
so we have been on the run for years, living from city to city, state to state. Even been in Canada a few times. I never made a friend, other than Sipher. Everyone else is scared of me.
Not that i blame them. My heightened strength and everything kinda intimidates people. Not to mention when i put my coat over my wings it looks like im a hunch back.
The only other kind of human is a feline-human. Which, yep! You guessed it! Is cat human. They have tails too, but they are much longer than canine-human tails. Skinnier too, not as fuzzy. Personally i like canine tails better. Not that I've ever met a feline-human, i hear they don't like birds. Anyway, the feline-human have really great reflexes, and they are able to squeeze through really small areas. Its pretty cool, honestly. I bet they could rob a bank pretty quickly.
Right now i live in a small town in Ohio, New Carlisle or something. Its kinda cold, but i don't mind. One of the best part of being an advanced human, is we are able to handle weather and other natural crap like that better than regular humans. Its like we are the next step up in genetics, and we are STILL getting hunted for it. Sucks, right?
I tap impatiently on the window of the old jeep Cherokee that Sipher has had for years. The smell of old oil and wood polish strong, but i don't care. It helps cover the smell of exhaust that nearly chokes me, even in small cities like this. I would much rather be flying as high as i can, up in the clouds where the air is fresh.
"Stop being impatient Mia!" Sipher growls, her brown eyes flashing almost a deep magnetic blue, which happens when her canine side starts acting up, and she used my decided name for this area. It is still odd to me, But I like that name.
"I can't help it, Sipher! Im so bored! I just want to set up so i can find something to do." My voice whines, but i flash a grin at her, my thick blond hair almost falling into my eyes, my bangs have gotten so LONG!
"Oh no you don't! Every time i hear those words there are sightings of aveien-humans. You fly too Low just to freak people out. You know how normans freak when they see admans." Sipher looked quickly at me, then back at the road, the words for normal humans, and advanced humans smushed into "normans" and "admans" making her smile. It was a little joke between us. We also called the species of humans cute names. "Nine-mans" for canine-humans, "fel-mans" for feline-humans and "bird-mans" for avian humans. Not very original but sure, what can ya do?
"But mooooooom!" I whine again, but i laugh, unable to hide my glee. "So what ARE we doing? After we set up? I swear if you say 'hunting' I'm taking your head off right here and now."
Sipher laughs, her soprano voice slightly melodic, as all nine-mans, their singing abilities are studied to be advanced by theory of the wolf's howl. What ever that means. I guess they are saying that she sings so well because of her canine side.
"We are being regulars. Fun times as all that happy good jazz. We won't leave the jeep for very long, but we will sight see. Even though this tiny town is hardly a tourist attraction." Sipher grins, her teeth sharp and unusually white, but her heart shaped face otherwise beautiful.
Freckles lightly dappling her cheeks under her large brown eyes, framed by thick black eyelashes. Her light brown hair was always slightly curled, unlike my knotted blond bundle. No matter what i did, my hair wouldn't curl. But it does poof, on a number of occasions. Sipher had a figure, but it wasn't pronounced, Her muscles were too evident. My body was always skinny, calories burn quick when u fly as high and as long as u can up in the sky. But me being 16, i should have had more curves. But nooooo. Stupid me being a avian-human, i cant develop many curves. Unless i stopped flying for a while and gained some weight, but who really needs curves if you have wings, right?
Sipher's coughing spell jerked me out of my head, and i frown at her in worry. She has been coughing a lot lately, and i don't know what to do. We can't go to the hospital like normal people, the doctors refuse to treat us and they call the SOH. Special organized hunters. The ones that killed my mom and dad for being bird people. The ones that will kill me and Sipher both if they catch us. Thats why we keep moving along, keeping to ourselves.
"You should get in bed, Sipher. It isn't good for you to be in the cold weather like this with that cough." I say quietly, worried.
"It doesn't matter Mia, we are here anyway. Lets just move our stuff in and get to work." She grins at me, her eyes almost too bright, but she was holding her head up high, which is a good sign.
I look out the windshield at the cute little house with lime green shutters, and dirty cream colored paint. It was smack dab in the middle of the woods, which is what we usually go for while looking for a house, and the deal on it was great. $100 for a month. Which we would only stay here for a day or two. A week at the most. Which money wasn't a problem, if you knew how to set up everything online. Fake accounts, fake names, gambling, selling things for others, and even ID theft. I may not be the smartest person in the world but I'm quite the accomplished hacker.
I busy myself with helping Sipher unload all our computers and wires from the back of the jeep, then grab my back pack and one medium sized box of my clothing. You don't have Much when you don't stay still long enough to accumulate dust.
After the laptops and desk tops were set up, i shrug off my jacket and head outside. "Sipher I'm stretching my wings! Don't worry about me." I head outside, hearing her heavy sigh. Boy, for 22 years old she sure has a chip on her shoulder about everything. Maybe on the inside she is like 40 or something.
The sun dapples through the trees around the house, turning the leaves a brilliant jade color. I smile and stretch out my 14ft wingspan, sighing in relief as the muscles finally stretch, feeling the sun warm my feathers. I could sun my wings all day, if i could. But the urge was too strong, so i take off running across the yard, and spring up into the air, jumping at least 3 feet off the ground before i flap my wings, bringing me higher into the air. I don't stop until the house is swallowed by the trees, and i fly as fast as i can in a circle, going probably 75mph. The wind whipped my hair everywhere, but i don't mind. The tangles come out easily.
Im always exhilarated by flying, who wouldn't be? My heart, which is larger and faster than normal humans, beats faster, and my lungs, surprisingly small, take in much more oxygen than any other species of human.
Swooping down, my sharp eyesight catch a slight flicker of movement below me, making me look harder. A group of humans were stalking toward my house, all of them in dark clothing.
Fear and anger shoot through me, fear that Sipher is down in the house alone with no warning, and anger that i didn't see the group of people earlier, making it harder to stop them.
Landing behind them, i use my wings to blast a powerful thrust of air at them, sending the five figures flying into trees and onto the ground. Im on the closest one in a matter of seconds, driving a hard elbow into their shoulder blades, but only feeling a bump of unyielding lumps. Shocked, i jerk back, seeing the other four figures had surrounded me, their glittering liquid-colored eyes sparkling in the dim light of forest day.
I gasp as i realize these aren't hunters. They are advanced humans. A group of admans.
