The truth can't hide forever

"This is your house?" Brian asks as his car rolls in front of my house with the overgrown grass and tangled bushes.
"Yup, don't get scared now."
He laughs a little. "Why would I be. I know there's much more important things in life then tending to the yard."
I stare at him for a moment then grab my book bag and we get out of the car and walk to the silence that is my house.
I make us each a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and pour store bought ice tea in to two glasses. I used to make my own, but not in a while. He used to love it. I carry the stuff to my bedroom with the help of Brian. It feels good to have some one else here. Very awkward. But good...not so lonely.
"So is this what you usually do when you get home?" Brian asks.
"Most of the time, only I'm alone."
"Where are your parents?"
"Mom is probably at her therapist or at a support group."
"Oh."
"What about..."
"Jail."
He puts down his sandwich and looks down for a moment. "I'm so sorry", he says and look back into my pained eyes. I take a bite of my sandwich as if nothing happened. "Don't be. It's where he should be."
"No I mean I'm sorry to be so nosy."
"It's fine. I knew you were thinking it and honestly it just feels nice to talk to someone, to not be alone."
He nods his head and takes another bite of his sandwich. "I have a secret too." I look at him waiting for him to continue. "You know how I joked about grabbing your ass? Well I'd never do that....to a girl." His cheeks flush into the color of the cherry jelly that's falling from his sandwich. "I'm gay."
