6. The School President

Finally, Mulki opened the classroom door. She was so late. Hopefully, she will not get in trouble.

The teacher stopped the lecture and all the students turned to stare at her. "Are you Mulki?"

She nodded.

"Mmmm. You are late. Do not make this a habit." The science teacher scolded her.

Mulki looked at the floor. "It won't happen again."

The science teacher searched for a paper, "Class, this is Mulki Abdullahi. Please welcome her. She is here all the way from America."

A female student rolled her eyes, "Another Diaspora kid?"

Mulki froze. What was her problem?

The teacher ignored her. "Mulki, you have been selected to be in the Blue class. These are the best students at this school. Congratulations on scoring so high on your tests. Diaspora students usually do not do well on the language test. I am surprised that you do not have to take SSL."

"SSL?" Mulki asked.

"Somali as a Second Language." The teacher answered. "I hope that you will keep your scores high, so that you can stay in this class. Now have a seat next to Mohamed. Mohamed raise your hand, so that she can see you."

To her horror, she looked back to see Mohamed from the welcome party, who happened to also be the half-brother of the guy who broke her heart. Mohamed was the last person that she wanted to see. She wanted to ask the teacher for another seat, but the teacher had already started the lecture again.

But Hassan didn't make her promise to stay away from Mohamed, but then again why did she always have to listen to Hassan. Wasn't she supposed to stop that? Maybe this was a good thing? Now, she at least knew one person in this class. She should thank Mohamed for him helping her this weekend.

Mulki tore off a piece of paper from her pink notebook and wrote on it. 'Thank you for saving me on Friday.' She put the note on his desk.

He picked up his pen and wrote then passed the paper back to her. It said, 'You promised that you would never bother me again.'

Mulki narrowed her eyes and wrote. 'I promised to never ask you anything again.' then passed it to him.

He wrote again, 'Same thing.'

'It is not." She wrote.

Then he crumpled this piece of paper and tossed it in the wastebasket.

The teacher glared at the class. "Who did that?"

Mohamed raised his hand.

The teacher smiled, "Oh, it is okay. But Mohamed, please remember that you are the School President. Students look up to you. You must always be a good example. "

Mohamed nodded, "I apologize, Teacher."

Mulki blinked. He was the School President. She shook her head. Mulki felt so uncomfortable sitting so close to him, so she tried to move away and fell out of her chair.

The class burst out laughing at her.

Mulki was mortified. She stood up, got back into her chair, without meeting anyone's eyes.

Mohamed banged his fist on the desk.

The whole class quieted immediately.

The teacher smiled, "Thank you Mohamed." then continued her lesson.

Mulki sighed and tried to pay attention the teacher's science lesson. It could be worse at least she was not in the same class as Hassan.

After class was over, the teacher told them to go to their next class, gym.
