I followed my brother away. I glanced over my shoulder once to see the fox girl's tail disappear around the corner. Other than the fact that she had a tough personality, she wasn't that bad. I thought she was kind of, cute.
But, I couldn't let my brother know. He would banish me from the pack if I did! And that's a pretty harsh punishment for a werewolf.
I turned back around only to bump into my brother. He whipped around to glare at me.
"Sorry." I mumbled.
He held a finger to his lips and turned back around. I tried to look over his shoulder, but he was a lot taller than I was. I couldn't see a thing!
"Why'd you stop?" I asked, my voice low in a whisper.
"Quiet, Beta!" He growled. I shut my mouth and waited. Moments later, we continued forward again. My brother turned to face me. "You got to be quiet." he told me. "We don't need to draw attention to ourselves."
"Sorry." I muttered. "Why'd we stop, though?"
"There was that girl again." he said. "She's up to something, my werewolf instincts can tell."
"Oh," I said. "I was just trying to see, sine you're taller."
My brother grumbled something I couldn't catch before turning around and starting forward again. My brother was the best, but he can have some issues with his temper ever since Father died and my brother became the Alpha. I knew he loved me, that's why he made me the Beta. But he sure doesn't show it very often.
I wondered if deep down he really did love me. What if he didn't? Back when we were pups he always made sure I stayed beside him and he would always play with me. But that was when we were pups. Now we both have big responsibilities to lead the pack. Maybe he was under lots of pressure. I could understand that.
The room had begun to darken as the window ceiling above us showed a pink, orange and golden sky as night fell. I yawned slightly, and I thought I heard my brother yawn as well. I hurried to pad along his side.
"You think we should rest?" I asked. "It's getting dark."
My brother snorted. "Why should we? There's a murderer among us. We can't give them a chance to kill. We can't put our pack in danger. We must stop them."
I sighed and fell behind. I mean, he was right. If we died, our pack wouldn't have a way to claim a new Alpha and Beta. Both of us had to stay alive for our pack to thrive!
