No Worries

It was late, at least 3 am. My mind was sluggish, the effects of the alcohol I drank earlier hitting me hard now. But at least my mind had stopped thinking long enough for me to forget. It was better this way, easier. The boom of the bass was all I could hear from the song an unremarkable band was playing on stage. I slipped my hands around another shot of whiskey, glancing around to find I was no longer alone. A boy, maybe not even 18 had sat at the barstool next to me. He glanced over to me, eyes flitting across the room. I looked for a minute before speaking. "Hey, kid. What's your deal?" I knew it was odd but it didn't matter. His eyes lit up like a sparkler on the Fourth of July.

"Wha-what do you mean?" He tried to be nonchalant, unsuccessfully. I leaned over to him, making sure the bartender couldn't hear.

"Well, you look like you're a kid running away from home." I could smell the liquor on my breath as I spoke. Fully aware he could too. "Now you see, I'm not going to say anything but you should hightail it outta here kid." This kid didn't want to know the shit that went down around here. His eyes hardened, he no longer looked so childish.

"Don't worry bout me, I'm all good." He spoke suddenly with a bit more confidence, even leaning back in his chair a bit. His hand flicked into the air with two fingers to alert the bartender.

"What can I get for you sir?" He spoke as if he didn't know damn well that this kid wasn't old enough. Money is money I guess.

"Whiskey would be great." He answered. Now that I could look at him properly I saw that he was pretty good looking. Curly hair the colour of a dark ale swept across his face. He looked pretty strong too. I gulped back the last of my drink before getting up. I dropped a 20 on the counter and walked away. Who knows this night might be interesting.
