‘I.am.shattered.’ I said to Lily, emphasising each word.
‘Why? I’m buzzing’ she squealed.
‘Oh I don’t know, maybe because we have just travelled 22 hours across the world to just go to school, I don’t see how an Australian school is any different to our English ones to be honest.’
‘Lighten up for fucks sake, just think of it as an adventure!’ she smiled, taking in the scenery as we piled off the plane.
‘An adventure? I only came on this exchange programme for you, so feel privileged!’ I said.
‘Oh I do, Miss Rebecca’ she put on her posh voice whilst pretending to bow down to me.
‘Shut up’ I said laughing, pulling her off the floor.
We picked out our bags up and rolled them down to the opening of the sea of people waiting for the flight to arrive. I stood on my tip toes to try and find a ‘Miss Woods’. She was the woman we were staying with for the next 3 months; she had some connection with our school so offered to give us a bed to sleep whilst doing our exchange programme.
‘Excuse me, please correct me if I’m wrong but are you Lily and Becca?’ A tall lady with black shiny bobbed hair appeared next to me, holding a few sheets of paper with a picture of the two of us attached, clearly the school had sent it to her.
‘Yeah we are! You must be Miss Woods?’ Lily asked politely, she was never normally this polite, obviously trying to make a good impression.
‘Please, call me Katy, I think we’d best be going, here let me take your bags’ she smiled. Lily gave Katy her bag and I reluctantly gave her mine. She seemed nice but I didn’t want her thinking I actually wanted to be here.
She lead us to her white, spotless car and lifted our bags into the boot. Lily got ion the passenger’s seat and I climbed in the back.
‘What time is it at home girls?’ she asked, whilst checking her make up in the wing mirror.
‘2 in the morning, I should be in bed’ I mumbled, seeing the time was 12pm here.
Lily carried on talking to her, telling her about our school at home and Katy told her about the school we would be going to. I put my headphones in and blasted Ed Sheeran as I gazed out of the window. After about half an hour we turned into a long road before pulling into a drive. I stepped out of the car in front an average sized house, I expected a flashier type of house, judging from her work suit and immaculate nails, but nevertheless I followed Lily and Katy into the house.
‘So we have the living room here, the kitchen just back there’ she lead us into a small corridor. ‘the bathroom is opposite my room, here, and your room is just at the end there, opposite my study, I hope you like it girls, I’ll leave you to settle in’ Katy walked back down to the kitchen and started to make a cup of tea.
Lily and I walked down to our room, she opened the door to reveal two double beds, each with deep turquoise bedding on. The walls were painted a pale turquoise and a small desk was in the corner with a simple lamp placed on it.’
‘nawww this is nice’ Lily said, laying down on the bed nearest the window.
‘It is actually’ I smiled, proud of myself to find something positive about the whole situation.
‘And she seems so lovely!’ Lily started to unpack her suitcase.
‘Hmph’ I grunted.
‘She is! And anyway she was telling me that she won’t really be in much, she’s working on a big project and is coming home late most nights, so we basically have this place to ourselves, just give her a chance Becca, and we can’t go home now!’
‘I suppose...’ I started to unpack my things too. Lily was right, I had to give Katy and this dump a chance, I wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
‘You coming?’ Lily asked once we had finished unpacking.
‘Where?’ I asked, putting my framed picture of me and my family next to my bed.
‘I don’t know? Anywhere! C’mon it’ll be fun to explore this place a bit!’
‘Naaa I’m going to stay back, I haven’t quite finished unpacking yet, you go, I’ll see you later.’
‘Fine!’ she grabbed her phone then walked out of the room.
Lily P.O.V
I told Katy I was popping out then I walked around the corner to a small park, it had a simple playground and a few benches dotted around, I walked over to one and sat down, taking out my phone. I only had 1 message from my mum, asking how the flight was. I tapped in a short reply then hit send, but an error message bounced back, saying I was out of credit.
‘Shit.’ I mumbled to myself.
‘Are you okay?’ I looked up a boy standing over me. He had brown hair which was tousled to the side, under a navy beanie.
‘Urm yeah, I just forgot how much international texts cost and I err forgot to top up’ I said shyly, I was never normally this shy.
‘Here, you can use mine’ The boy took out his phone and handed it to me.
‘No it’s fine! It costs way too much, I can’t expect you to pay that!’
‘That’s okay!’ he said as he slid onto the bench next to me.
‘So, you’re English eh?’ he asked as I typed my mum’s number into his phone.
‘Yeah’ I giggled, he clearly heard my accent.
‘What are you doing here then, I’m sure I haven’t seen you round before?’
‘I’m an exchange student, I’m here with my best mate’ I replied, handing back his phone.
‘Ahhh right, nice!’
‘Yeah I suppose, thank you so much by the way! I would give you the money but I left my purse back at my house.’
‘It’s fine, I’m sure you can pay me back in some other way’ he winked cheekily then walked off without even giving his name.
