Adrian and I were now even more confused about our location. We had so many questions, and the answers seemed impossible to find. Assuming we would be spending quite a bit of time in Moomin Valley, we decided it was high time we met some locals. We made plans with the Moomin family: Moominmamma would work on a delicious meal, while Moomin took Adrian and I to invite some of their friends over for dinner. It was really sweet of the Moomins to put forth so much effort just for two people they know very little about.
After Moominmamma let us go, Moomin took the lead. "First, I'm gonna get Snufkin!" He said, with a happy voice.
"Whats Snufkin like?" Adrian asked.
"Oh, he's great. He doesn't like to talk much, but hes so wonderful to be around." Moomin said. Moomin's a great kid, so I figure if Moomin likes this guy so much, hes got to be alright. Moomin took us to a bridge by the stream and then we walked until we saw a tent.
Moomin took off at what I assumed was the fastest he could run. "Right there!" He said joyously. He hopped into the tent doors and landed on the inside, and there was a loud "uf!" From inside. Adrian and I turned to eachother at the same time, bursting into laughter. Moomin came out, followed by what seemed to be a regular man. I was shocked, I thought we wouldn't see a human for a while!
Snufkin was dressed in green all over, with a hat that reminded me of a witch and a dirty cloak. It was... earthy, thats for sure. He was chatting with Moomin, then when he saw us he widened his eyes in what I could only assume was minor surprise.
"Hello, who are you?" Snufkin asked politely, giving Moomin a look I couldnt read. Adrian and I introduced ourselves, each of us shaking Snufkin's cold hands.
"We wanted to invite you to dinner!" Moomin smiled, clasping his hands (paws?) Together. Snufkin smiled back. "Moominmamma's making something delicious!"
"That sounds wonderful, Moomin. Of course I'll come!" Snufkin said. I noticed his unique voice. It was soft, but at the same time confident. I wasnt sure if it was just the monotony of his words or the comparison to the very excited Moomin, but it was emotive while also not seeming very emotive at all. Snufkin had.. very little body language, for the most part, he held still while he talked. Perhaps he had the spirit of a sloth inside him!
Anyway, we began the trek to someone Moomin called Little My. "So... her names just... My?" Asked Adrian.
"No, no, no, of course not! Little is part of her name. She'll be very offended if you use little as an adjective to her," Moomin explained.
"Did her mom actually name her Little? Like is that on her birth certificate?" I asked, now a little intrigued.
"Well, I- I'm not sure, actually. Im not about to ask, though!" Moomin joked. Only Snufkin let a little air out of his nose as a laugh. Adrian and I shared a look. It got really quiet, and the scenery was mostly flat here, so I motioned to Adrian that we could quietly play rock-paper-scissors. The first time, I won! The next time, she won. Then we tied! We started giggling quite a bit, and our quiet game became pretty loud. Moomin amd Snufkin started watching us.
"How d'you play that??" Moomin asked.
"You dont know how to play rock paper scissors?!" Adrian asked in disbelief.
"Why, no, Ive never heard of it!" He replied.
"I'll show you! I said, turning towards Snufkin with my hands out. He mimicked my hand movements. "Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock," i said, making the shape with my hand as I said the word. Since Snufkin and Moomin had already watched us play a couple of times, I assumed he would get the hang of it pretty fast.
Snufkin's first round, he.... tied with me! I laughed a little, and looked up to see him smiling a little, too. He had sort of thinner than average lips, but for someone who I assumed didnt have chapstick, they were smooth. Realizing I was staring, I quickly turned to Moomin to see if he wanted to play. Our trip to Little My's quickly transformed into a tournament of rock paper scissors: 3 rounds each, winners play winners! Normally, it would have been hard to make rock-paper-scissors so entertaining, but I loved seeing how excited Moomin was. I think Snufkin was excited, too. It was like seeing a child learn to play for the first time!
Sadly, our fun was over when we showed up to a cutesy little house with lots of circular windows. Moomin informed us that it was Little My's!
