Chapter 8- Letting Him In

Joseph Barnes, the Joseph Barnes the seminarian whom I've been crushing on for almost a year now is sitting right beside me right now! This is supposed to be the best time to flirt with him, get to know him. But I'm as silent as I can be which is troubling for someone who's talkative like me.

"I'm Joseph by the way,Joseph Ryan Barnes." extending his hand for me to shake.

I almost scream 'I know' but instead I say "Mary Elise Adams" with a smile."or you can call me Ellie."shaking his hand.

"Well nice meeting you Mary Elise....Wait? You're Mary Elise Adams?

                "I guess so, why?"

"We're Facebook friends, that explains why you're so familiar."

"Wait a second, you remember all you're Facebook friends?"

"Not exactly, just you. Because when I looked up your profile, it says that you're also from this town."

"Oh" is all I can muster to say with matching mini heart attack.

And just like that, were back again to that awkward silence. All I can hear is the loud pounding of the rain and the occasional thunder.

"So how's life at the seminary?" I ask out of nowhere.

"It's really good. I don't feel homesick at all because I feel like the seminary is my second home. The priests are my second fathers and my classmates are my brothers. Just cheesy isn't it?"

"No,I think it's sweet, in a manly way ofcourse. And a really great bond for you there huh? Sometimes I really wonder how it feels like to have a brother or any sibling for that matter." I blurt out faster than I could think. Joseph looks at me, wonder laced in his eyes.

"Well, eversince I was little it's just me and my mom. I'm an only child and mom and dad called it quits when I was 8 or 9. I can barely remember. "

"I'm sorry to hear that" he says out of pure concern.

"Oh don't be, I'm over it. It was a long time ago. Besides I have my mom and my friends. I'm all good"

"We're friends aren't we?" He suddenly asks. "Outside Facebook I mean."

                "Yeah, I guess so."

"So can you add me to the list of people that makes you okay?"

I was supposed to answer, when the door to the conference room opens and a few people came out. Some are priests and the others are lay teachers. My mom comes out together with the rector and it looks like they're talking. I wave at her to let her know I'm here.

"Good evening" We both say at once. The rector acknowledges us.

Once they're done, both the rector and Joseph walks us out. I turn around offered him a smile and mouthed "Thank you for waiting with me"

I get in my car and we drive away.
