INTRODUCTION

dear diary, today I learned there are things worse than death.

OCTAVIA CYPRESS LAHOTE was different. inexplicably, and unavoidably different. she can hear nature, in all its majesty, in all its gruesomeness. great oaks murmur her childhood fairytales, migrating fowl trill tales about the warmth of the southern lands, crystals hum with certainty, give her the strength to make it through the day; the ocean at her back, strong and unyielding and eternal. cypress hears it all, hears every being continuously fight day in and day out for their right to live another day; to stay intertwined in the never-ending circle of life. she hears their grateful hymns for simply continuing to exist, hears the earth cry as century-old plants are ripped from the ground, knows the sound of silent sorrow and utter indifference better then joyful laughter. she knows life and struggle and death, has come to accept them, come to accept that there is nothing that she can do to prevent them. cypress lahote thought herself to be above the majority of normal human emotions, yet she finds herself rattled by the presence of something new in her forest, beings so outside of anything she had ever known, beings of marble and ruby, so outside of the comfort of life's circle, yet intimately connected to death in ways that intrigue the darkest parts of her decaying soul.

AUTHORS NOTE

the idea to update and recreate a new image of octavia has been in my head for a while now, but recently I was inspired to create this character. Octavia Cypress ( who will go by cypress in this fic ) is not like her counterpart, and I'm sure you will realize very soon that this story is different from innocent was. ( you don't have to read innocent to read nefarious, they are going to be very different stories )

some obvious changes that I'll let you guys know beforehand are: face claim change ( i love marie but she's not native american, and I wanted to do it right this time around ), cypress and cedar are paul's cousins, not brother and sister, cypress can hear more then just animals, she can feel and sense nature to varying

my vision has changed, my writing style has changed, thus, the story has changed.
