America's POVI looked in the mirror one last time before I went downstairs for breakfast. I was wearing a black NATO t-shirt with blue jeans, ripped at the knees, and to finish it off sunglasses. The outfit was pretty basic, but I wasn't going anywhere that required me to dress up.
"AMERICA! Your food's getting cold!" Canada yelled.
I sighed and exited the bathroom, stopping dead in my tracks when I saw Canada. His hat was on crooked, shirt was wrinkled and unbuttoned at the top.
"Holy shit, did you fuck someone or get ran over?" I blurted out.
"W-what?" Canada said with wide eyes, almost dropping the plate he was cleaning.
"You look like shit. Everything okay?" I asked, sitting down at the dining table to eat my pancakes.
"O-oh.. I guess I'm just kinda nervous to go back to school." He said as he put away the plate and joined me at the dining table. "Having to get caught up with everyone really stresses me out for some reason."
"Not a fan of getting caught up on the other countries' politics?" I joked.
"Ughh don't even get me started.." Canada whined, resting his head on the table.
"Look, we've gotten through the first day of school like what? 5 times now? You'll be fine." I reassured him and myself, because I was also kinda nervous to go back to school for the same reason.
"You make it sound so easy.." He groaned, seemingly lost in thought. A buzz from his phone brought him back to reality.
"Oh, Dad wants to facetime with us." Canada informed, the worried expression on his face turning into a scowl.
"About?"
"School."
I sighed, pulling up a chair to sit next to Canada and watched as my dad's face appeared on Canada's phone.
"Good morning!" He said in a voice way too cheerful for 7 am.
"Sup." I yawned.
"Morning." Canada said.
"Just wanted to call to wish you two luck on your first day! You're finally seniors!" My dad said, a proud smile on his face.
"Yep.." Canada said with a nervous laugh.
"How are you guys feeling about it?" My dad questioned.
"Nervous.." Canada said honestly, fidgeting with his hands.
"Relieved I'll be able to leave that hell hole next year." I laughed, earning a disapproving look from my father.
"I hope you don't speak to your teachers like that." My dad warned.
"I try to talk to my teachers as little as possible." I retorted.
"Grow up, America." My dad sighed. "You two are almost adults now, what do you plan to do with your life once you graduate?"
"I.. I don't know." Canada said nervously.
"I'm just gonna go with the flow." I replied.
My dad looked mortified. "You guys haven't thought about your future, not even once?!"
I rolled my eyes at him. "Nope."
"Not in detail." Canada admitted guilty.
"Start thinking about it in detail, then." My dad scolded. "You'll both be running a country full time next year."
Me and Canada nodded our heads, preparing for a lecture.
"You'll be on your own, having to take care of everything by yourself. No extra help like you've been getting. This is what I've tried to prepare you for, because it'll be what you do for the rest of your life." My dad went on. "I know you two probably think this is some kind of game, but this is real life. You'll be taking care of your own finances, health, wellness, shipments, trades, and so forth. You'll have lots of choices to make and things to look after next year."
"Yeaah." I responded.
"I'll call again after school." He said, sighing. "Please think about what I said."
"Sure thing, pops." I said dismissively.
"Also, Canada, please don't tell me you're planning to go to school like that?" My dad cautioned. "You look like a mess."
Embarrassed, Canada quickly rushed upstairs to the bathroom.
"Told him so." I muttered under my breath. "Bye."
"Stay out of trouble." He warned, and then hung up.
I sighed and walked towards the living room, leaving Canada's phone on the table. I didn't really want to start this day super bummed out and stressed about my future, but beggars can't be choosers I guess.
I plopped down on the couch, sinking into the cushions. I leaned back and took out my phone to see 20 unread messages. A few were from my parents, most from this newly added group chat.

"I didn't even look that bad." Canada said, emerging from the bathroom looking neater than he did before.
"You looked pretty bad." I teased.
"Gee, thanks." He replied, throwing his backpack on and retrieving his phone.
"We leaving?"
"Yeah, school starts in 15 minutes and the drive there takes like 5-10 minutes."
"Can't we just leave last minute?"
"I'm not risking being late."
I groaned and slowly got up from the couch.

neko > meet at our lunch table when you arrive~
I pocketed my phone and threw my backpack over my shoulder.
"I'll drive." Canada offered, taking the car keys off the tv stand.
"Was gonna force you to anyways." I said, half joking.
