The velvet lake

I stood at the edge of the downward slope of ice. It was going straight down, thick and smooth with rounded curves. I couldn't jump down, but was I running from something, I did not know. Beyond was a frozen over lake, blanketed with velvety snow. Spruce trees perfectly framed the landscape, and I could see a cozy cottage on the very edge of the horizon. Elegant white swans floated across the pond, though I wasn't sure how they could swim. The whole thing was very picturesque, if only I knew how to get down.

I sat down, gathering my courage. I could slide down on my bottom, but I was sure she would tell me it was a bad idea. I caught myself as soon as it entered my consciousness. There was a she, and I had to find her. I sat down carefully and began by descent down the icy waterfall. My whole body was screaming in the cold as frost numbed every sensation. My clothing was damp with clear, springy water.
