Chapter 1

I have always been the kind of person that wants so much to believe in things that i know can never exist. Fairies, magic, true love. All of this are what i wish would be real. But, i knew it was stupid to hope. Stupid to even want to hope. I should have learnt my lesson. The day my brother told me that Santa Claus was not real, i cried and insisted to my mother that he was lying. She had taken me in her arms and ordered my brother to stand in the corner for fifteen minutes. But, that night, my brother made me stay up with him. We watched as a big figure came through the door that led to the garage with a big sack. He took out presents and ate the cookies i left by the fireplace. I knew it was my father from how he kept sneezing. And i would know that orange and cinnamon smell that was my dad.

You would think that i would learn my lesson and stop believing in impossible things. Like true love. But just like any other teenage girl, i fell for the first boy that told me i was beautiful and gave him my heart without hesitation. When he broke my heart, i blamed myself. However, Dave thought differently. That was how i found myself watching my best friend and my former boyfriend locked in a fight as i walked out of school.

“Dave, stop it! Stop it!,” i screamed to get his attention.

I ran to them where a few students had gathered to watch. Some were grinning and i felt disgusted. Some had shocked and horror-stricken face. No one was trying to stop them. I pushed through the crowd to grab Dave to stop him even though i was much smaller in size. Before i could do that, another hand reached out and wrapped around Jeff’s waist. He was hauled back, away from Dave.

Aaron tried to wrestle Jeff. He was too busy trying to get Jeff to stop flailing and calm down to see me nod to thank him. Dave was panting and he looked like he was going to march to Aaron and grab Jeff by the collar. I immediately stood in front of him to get his attention. I placed both of my hands on his arm and looked straight into his face. He looked back at me, eyes flashing.

“Hey, listen to me. Listen to me,” i demanded, holding his angry gaze. “He’s not worth it.”

Dave looked at me for a moment before turning away to pick up his bag from the ground. He ran his fingers through his hair and walked towards the school gate. I realised he had left his shoe bag. Grabbing it, i ran after him, trying to keep up with his big steps. I could still hear Aaron calming Jeff down.

“Jeff, come on, man. How much detention do you want?” Aaron asked, forcing Jeff to control himself.

“That ass just came at me. What’s his problem?” he asked. Then, his angry voice turned acid. “Oh, her.”

I turned back slightly and saw Jeff staring after me, his brows furrowed. I felt heat creep up my neck and turned away quickly. Dave was already a few paces out of school and quite a far distance from me. i ran to him, panting when i reached his side.

“That guy is a dick,” Dave said, walking furiously.

I quickened my steps. “Would you calm down? Don’t waste your energy on him.”

Dave shrugged. “I am calm.”

I glanced at him. His eyes were not shooting daggers but shadowed. His face was blank except for one side of his mouth which was lifted. I knew that look. He was locking down on his anger, not wanting me to worry and dwell on it. I sighed and decided to change the subject.
