We all have a story. Some are full of action, comedy or science fiction. Some are pure fiction, thrillers or romantic. But mine isn't. My story isn't one that should be told or heard. Mine is a story of truth, a story of emotions, a story of great fear no man can dare to imagine. But here, in this book, I tell the story I hid away. The story of Caroline Musgrove.
It all began 50 years ago, in the late 1960's. I was 16 years old. And I lived with my family in a large house on one of the richest streets in London. I went to a private school where I wasn't very popular. I only had 3 friends. Lucy Smith, Harold Jones and Victoria Butters. Victoria was my closest and best friend. We were next door neighbours and we were raised together, almost like we were unrelated sisters. Victoria had a blond bob with a thick fringe, an oval face and sea blue eyes. She was beautiful. She was perfect.
Every day Victoria and I would walk to school together. Chatting, messing around, laughing. Every day I'd go to that grand house of hers and knock on the brass handle, waiting for Victoria to run to the door with a big grin on her face, ready for the long day ahead. One day though, I knocked on the door and nobody answered. I thought nothing of it and knocked again. No one answered. I stepped back gazing up at where Victoria's room was. There was a tall teenager standing at the window looking out. However, it wasn't Victoria. It was a stranger. Someone I never met before.
"Hello? Hello, is Victoria in?"
The light figure didn't react.
"Excuse me?"
The figure stood still. I began to lose my patience.
"Oh my. An intruder! Get out of my friends house! GET OUT! GET OUT NOW!"
The figure sharply moved it's head and looked directly at me. Her eyes were red and her face was pale. She screamed, her mouth becoming a black hole. The scream was like one of a young child, in great pain. The windows smashed, the wind blew hard, the fear grew inside me as I stared at this unnatural happening. I fell to the floor unconscious.
