Chapter 14.
Cole's P.O.V.I sighed as I pulled Claire to my side and held her gently.
"He used to be in a gang while our parents were still alive. One day, they got a call from a relative or at least that was what I was told and they had to leave. They were going into someplace, the cops wouldn't tell me where, and got shot. Killed. Jesse was only 15 and I was 18, turning 19. I convinced the police that I could take care of my little brother. At the time he was living in a house with another person. The police said that if I kept him out of trouble, he could continue living there. That was two years ago."
Claire shifted uncomfortably beside me so I gave her a reassuring squeeze, making sure to not hurt her.
"It's okay," I smiled grimly, "I'm kind of over it now."
"Anyways, after a while I got him away from the gang and we moved here. My cousin had a place and was going into the army so he said that I could stay there and look after the house. Jesse got his own place again. He didn't want anything to do with me. I don't know how he got the money but if it just happened to be from a gang, I didn't want to get him in trouble with the authorities again. I've noticed that he has a big drinking problem. I tried to get him help but he never wanted it."
"Oh," she whispered.
After that, we fell into a comfortable silence and soon she drifted off to sleep. I kissed her forehead and got off of the hospital bed before exiting the room.
I found Jesse in the lobby and I put a hand on his shoulder.
"She's asleep. You can go see her now if you'd like. I don't know if she's going to freak out when she wakes up though."
He nodded his head and slowly walked to the room. I sat down in the chair he was previously sitting down in, letting my mind drift. I remembered sitting in the hospital with a police officer when a doctor came and told my brother and I that our parents were dead.
Jesse's P.O.V.
I looked at Claire, her small fragile body laying underneath the death-white sheets of the hospital bed. She was already tiny to start with but her eyes and cheeks were sunken in and I knew it was because she didn't eat very much. The only way I could tell she was alive was by slight movement her chest made when she breathed in and out.
I hung my head, taking it into my hands.
"I'm so sorry, Claire," I muttered.
I could see the bandages wrapped around her hands and the stitches in her arms, but the ones that stood on the most were the ones on her stomach. They were bleeding through the bandage a bit and I could see where the glass went into her, even through the sheets.
I was so angry and repulsed by what I did to her. She had done nothing but been kind to me and this is how I repaid her?
I heard the sheets rustling and to prevent the same thing from happening again, I dashed out of the room, not wanting to frighten Claire anymore.
Claire's P.O.V.
I mumbled, shifting a bit as I opened my eyes. I looked over to the chairs by my hospital bed but saw no one. I could have sworn I heard Jesse's voice, but I guess I was was wrong. I sat up a bit and hissed as a jolt of pain came from my lower abdomen.
I pressed my palms into the bed and pushed myself up and winced even more. Was I just hurt everywhere?
One of the nurses came in to provide me with pain pills which I graciously accepted. She told me that I could probably go home tonight and that my parents had been contacted.
I froze at the words instantly.
My dad was abusive and a drunk and my mom wouldn't stand up to my father. I couldn't go back home, but I had nowhere else to go.
What about Cole? He was a police officer, surely he could help me stay out of my dad's reach, right?
"Miss?" the nurse called.
"Yes, um, can you fetch Cole from the waiting room please?"
"Certainly, dear" she said with a sickly smile.
I grimaced inwardly and rearranged myself into a more comfortable position.
Cole entered my hospital room and I asked him to sit down because I needed to speak with him.
"My parents kicked me out and I was living with my best friend until her mom said I couldn't stay there anymore. My dad is abusive and my mother won't stand up to him and after leaving Alison's house I went to Jesse. I obviously can't stay there, but do you think I would be able to stay with you? I mean, since you are a police officer and everything."
Cole gave me a sad look and sighed, looking into my eyes. "You know I have to report this, don't you?"
A sickening feeling settled in my stomach and I nodded my head, gulping.
"Yes, I know."
"And you will most likely be put into foster care after an official investigation."
I held back a flinch at the foreign word and nodded my head again.
"Get some rest," Cole said softly as he kissed my head. "We'll talk about this later, but for now you can stay with me. I can't guarantee you a permanent placement but I can keep you out of the harm of your father. "
I smiled at him and closed my eyes, the pain pills starting to take their hold on me as I was pulled into the darkness once again.
