Today was going to be hell. I have always wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself. So after high school, I decided to join the Navy. Today was Wednesday, September 16th 1971. It has been a hard journey and after six months of basic training and four years of college, I now graduated the United States Naval Academy.
I graduated number four in my class and number two has a sniper. I had the highest level of combat efficiency and beat everyone else in target simulations. It was never a game. Treat everything as though your life depended on it. Here, you don't look out for number one. You look out for everyone. Otherwise you would be dead in a coffin without any tombstone. That's how dangerous basic training was. One day you get to sleep in to five hundred, or five a.m. and the next you're up by three hundred. Always running five miles a day, jumping over obstacles, and above all, becoming a family.
Since junior year in high school, my best friend Luna Stone has been threw everything with me. She went through basic training along with me and she even got to be number one in our graduating class. She had the best test grades and the third best sniper score. One day I hope to pop the question,... I want to ask her to marry me. By God, I hope she will take me.
"Welcome to the United States Warship; Douglas." That's what you hear when you board this ship. "This is how it is run here; you shut your mouths and do as told!" This was the second ship I have been assigned to in the last five years.
The United States of America is at a stalemate with the Soviet Union. Both sides are at different ends. This war seems as though it will go on forever. I am currently this ship's combat instructor and lead sniper. Second Lieutenant Scott Snow. It's been over fourteen years since I joined the Navy, and for what it seems, it looks like I'll be here for another fourteen years to come. Our ship is heading out for an African, city. It was a cold night. Nobody said anything other than orders. Soon after getting word of our destination, we suited up and boarded two helicopters. One had the name "Soul of Davy Jones", while the other was; "Fire Fly". I boarded the Fire Fly, and took off. Soon after departure we split up for different assignments. I would never have believed it would be the last time I see everyone alive.
Two hours later, I went to sit next to Luna. She had a smile on her face. I looked at her with a lovely smile. She leaned over to my right shoulder and whispered into my ear. I was struck in awe. She said that after this mission we could take our pensions or money granted to us for our service, retire and move on towards building a family. I would think moving somewhere in South Carolina would be nice. I kissed her. The Sgt just starts laughing and turns with a straight face, ninety degrees to us and stares us down like dogs. We got the message. We both blushed and turned forward. Prepared for instruction.
The Sgt then left his seat, and began looking over the combat diagram. Witch showed the operation in detail. Two plans were suggested.
"Our target is DEVIL's Daughter. Age 24, at 5ft 6. Capture or Execute. Failure to neutralize the target is unacceptable. Time to Drop-Tag-Run." Barked the Sgt. Location: African City- Fasie - 20:00
"I wonder what her real name is. A name identifies the individual. Their nature. Yet what if the name is fake? Does that mean that they are simply fake?" asked Commander Wilson, the pilot . I looked at him. He was a bit old, around forty. I was not the one in charge on this mission, I was just the sniper for the operation. To be able to become a sniper, you had to have training, and be the rank of an officer. I had both. Training as a sniper back at basic training and I am a Second Lt. We went in, one squad; eight troops. Luna was the only female while the rest of us were male. We had a time gate 2 hours, or time limit to accomplish the objective. Estimated time of arrival ten minutes.
"Let us pray to Saint Michael before we go into battle." Said the St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen." We prayed. Next, pitch black. Ready for the three shouts. When the commander or Sergeant orders three or mark, we jump.
