"Can I be directed to Charlotte Flint's room please?" I ask politely.
"Who are you to the patient?" the nurse asked with a sour look on her face.
"I'm the one who saved her, I just need to return something to her." I calmly and politely respond.
"Look, we are really rushed here this morning, you can go but don't stay long. Room 263." The nurse looked up at the new arrivals from the mall that were still flooding in.
"Thank you." I call to her as she runs to help in the chaos. I go to the second floor and find room 263. I knock softly before entering. She is hooked up to a few different machines and has an oxygen mask covering most of her face.
Suddenly I'm nervous and am not sure what to do with my hands. I shake my head to clear it and take a seat in the chair that is set up in the corner. I watch her heart rate on the screen and find myself drifting off to the rhythmic sound.
I am jolted awake when the door of Lottie's room is flung open. I freeze as a young women who looks a lot like Lottie runs to her bedside. I remember her from the apartment fire, it's Lottie's sister and Scott's chick.
Scott follows after her with Lottie's chart in his hand. Why didn't I think to look at it? "She is scheduled for surgery in the morning." Scott informs the girl who I can't remember the name of. "Gracie, it's just a punctured lung."
Gracie? I don't think that's her name, is it? I can't remember.
"Charlotte Rose, I swear when you wake up I am going to kill you." The woman scolded Lottie's frame that looked so fragile in this state.
"I can't let you do that." I speak up and the girl jumps back into Scott.
"Vince? What are you doing here?" Scott asks rubbing the girls shoulders.
"I saved her. Again. I just wanted to make sure she was safe." I ramble quietly. "I'm Vincent, Vince. I don't think we've been properly introduced." I hold out my hand for the girl to shake.
"I'm Cheyenne." She speaks but looses none of the suspicion in her tone. "Where is Mike?"
"I don't know, he was shot at the mall. If I had to guess I'd say in surgery, it was a head injury." I say now embarrassed that I didn't think to check on the guy.
"I'll go see." Scott says, kissing Cheyenne's temple before leaving the room.
Cheyenne is still giving me the evil eye while I stand there awkwardly. She pulls out her phone and calls someone. "Hey, it's Cheyenne..... No, we are at the hospital... I'm fine, it's CJ and Mike....There was a shooting....CJ has surgery in the morning and Mike is in surgery now... Ok I'll see you soon... bye."
"You can leave now." She blurts when she is off the phone. "We've got it from here."
"Oh, um, alright." I say and start walking towards the door. The last thing I need is to start making enemies with the sister.
"Mike will be out of surgery soon." Scott says as he walks back into the room. "You should stay, they'll want to thank you."
I nod at him and observe the death glare now being thrown at Scott. Then I sit in the corner seat I had originally been in and watch as Scott goes behind Cheyenne and gives her a hug from behind, whispering something in her ear that makes her cheeks go red while she playfully hits his arms around her waist. "Fine, I'll be nice but I didn't ask him to save me." Cheyenne tries to whisper but fails and a smile tugs at my lips.
"Well I'm glad he did." Scott responds loud enough so I can hear him. Then peppers kisses on her neck, forcing her to remove herself from his grip.
"We aren't alone." She whisper yells in a warning tone.
Just then the guys mom came in. This is going to be interesting.
