"100 papes please"
"50 papes Weasel"
Down the line, all that could be heard was the sound of numbers, mispronounced names, and coins slamming onto metal. The sound overwhelmed you. Even though you had been working for years, it felt like it was your first day.
You walked up to the counter "150 papes please" you mumbled, slamming the 75 cents on the metal box. 150 papers fly at your chest and then to the floor.
You gather you papers, stuff them into your cream colored bag, and go to your spot on the corner near the church.
"One more hour." you told yourself. It was the middle of summer and you were sick of the heat. Even though you live in upstate New York, the heat was still unbearable because of how cold it usually is.
The last hour of your day seemed to drag on forever. When the day was finally over, you managed to sell all of your papers. You don't know how you managed to do it. You walked to the lodge while counting the change you earned.
A few minutes of walking and you feel a strong hand grab your shoulder. "Guess who!" a voice behind you calls out.
"Hmm... Racetrack?"
"Nope"
"Alright then. Specs?"
"Nope"
"I know it's you Jack!" I laughed, grabbing the hat off of my head, not realizing what I was doing.
Umm... Walt." Jack stuttered.
You feel embarrassed. As you start to walk farther along the long beaten path to the little hut you had been staying at for years, you feel that you hadn't moved but instead were picked up, and brought into the woods.
"What are we doing here Cowboy?" you ask Jack, a look of genuine fear in your eyes.
"This." he replies before pulling you into his muscular arms and kissing you square on the lips. You don't resist, but instead deepen the kiss when you hear footsteps.
"What the actual FRICK Jack!" you turn to see your older brother, Crutchie Morris, standing near the shadow.
"Umm. Walt?"
"Call me y/n. Please?"
"Okay. y/n meet me on the roof at 8:00. Don't be late"
Once Jack had ran off, you were left alone in the woods with a pissed off Crutchie.
"What the hell?" Crutchie asks, pulling you into a hug.
"Hey brudda!" You exclaim. Returning the hug.
You walk back to the lodging house, helping your brother down the path even after he insisted that he can do it alone. You didn't want to take any chances. He was your only family, after all.
8:00 came and you walked up the elongated steps of the fire escape. Jack is already up there, waiting for you. He gives you a peck on the cheek, and you make a little noise of pleasure. He lays down, and pulls you on top of him. The two of you proceed to make out until Race comes out onto the fire escape to look for you.
"Sorry to interrupt but Crutchie needs you, y/n."
You run inside, hoping that he's safe. You see all of your fellow newsies surrounding him. "Give him some space." you command. People scatter to their bunks, getting in them, and turning in for the night.
"You made it!" Crutchie exclaimed through sobs.
"Do you want to talk to Jack as well as me?" you ask him. It's slight, but a nod could be seen.
You walk him up the fire escape, and Jack wakes up. "Hey. Crutch. What's wrong man?" It broke your heart to see your two favorite boys crying together, like some sort of ritual.
"I *hic* had a *hic* nightmare."
You sit down in between the two of them. Silently, a single tear falls down your left cheek. "Crutchie. Can you expand?" you ask him, wanting him to feel like he could come to you for help.
"*hic* I was *hic* back in the refuge *hic* and they *hic* took me *hic* and..." His sentence phases out with a series of sobs and hiccups. You rub his back, just like your mother did, while Jack goes and gets him a drink.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are gray. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away." you sing, trying to keep him calm.
"You *hic* sound like *hic* Mama when you sing." Your brother replies as he drinks the water brought up by Jack.
"Now try and get some sleep." Jack says, in a soothing voice.
"Hey guys." you say, walking towards the fire ecape steps.
"What's that?" your brother and Jack ask at the same time.
"I don't feel too well." You remark, just before throwing up over the railing.
