BAM BAM BAM. I jolt awake, looking at the clock. SHIT! Not today! I jump out of bed and grab for my clothes. It's my 18th birthday and I have a ceremony in my honor in which I'm at risk of being late for. I grab my tux and look at it. When the time is right, this will change into a certain color or colors that will tell my family exactly how my life will go from here. I put on my pants and let the suspenders hang down by my thighs. Soon after I'm finished, I hear my mothers soft voice. "Baby, don't forget to put your hair back." I smile and open the door, having already done so. "Oh, Joey...." My mothers soft blue eyes shine with tears.
"Now, Martha, don't go pestering the boy with the sob stories about his childhood. His coming of age ceremony is in thirty minutes." My father gently puts his hand on her shoulder and she sniffs, wiping her eyes on a handkerchief. "Oh, you're right, I'm sorry Joseph. You're a man now. Come, today is the first one of these in a very long time." We walk out of the door when a flash of color catches my eye. Too colorful to be anything of my parents, the pair of them are Gryffindors so their vehicles are red. This one, however, was green. Only one family I know next to ours has that much house pride. And their house is none other than the house of Snakes, Slytherin. I turn my head enough to catch a glimpse of blond hair and I smile. The Malfoys have come all the way from their humble home of England, bringing with them their son I'm sure. We haven't seen each others in 11 years. "Mother, father, if you'll excuse me a moment." Father smiles. "Actually take your time a minute, you'll be riding with young Draco."
I smile and rush down the stairs, right over to the Green muscle car, seeing him lean against the passenger door. He picks his head up and a beautiful smile graces his lips. "Joey." He says, straightening up. Damn, he's gotten taller that's for sure. But still not taller than me. And he's become very handsome. I clear my throat and walk over to him. "Dray, it's been too long, old friend." He chuckles and hugs me tightly. "Old, friend? Thought we were brothers?" I hug him back and take in his smell. Vanilla and fresh cut wood.....Mahogany? I let go and try to ignore the pit in my stomach. "Dray, you know things changed." He sighs sadly. "Unfortunately, but.....what if it happens?" I shrug. "Then I go to school with you." He opens my door and I get in. He closes the door and gets in behind the wheel. "Joey, is that what you want?" I shrug. "It doesn't matter. If I do get chosen and earn my scales, then it's not up to me."
He looks down at his lap. "What happens if you get picked?" I shift a bit. "Well, I'll need to find a...." I let the sentence hang in the air. "A mate." He finishes up for me. "Father explained it to me. You'll need someone strong enough to help you control the power depending on which one or ones pick you." I nod and look out of the window. We pull up to the temple and get out. I take a deep breath and comb my hair with my fingers. I see my parents pull up and smile at me, this ones different. Like they know something. I take a deep breath and turn around, right into Dray. His arms shoot out and wrap around me.
His eyes turn from a silver to a stormy grey. I feel my heartbeat speed up, the blood rushing to two parts of me. My face is turning red, I know based on his amused smile. The other half of the blood rushes down to my crotch area. I take deep breaths, closing my eyes and hear him chuckle. "Trying to keep from having a bulge during the ceremony?" My eyes shoot open and I look at him, shocked. His eyes dart down to my lips and I start to say something when I feel his lips on mine. I instantly go limp in his arms before pushing into him, pinning him against his car door. Fuck, this is what I've wanted for so long. He softly pushes his hand against my chest and I take a step back. His eyes are conflicted and he straightens his jacket before heading towards the temple. I do the same after a few minutes and begin the climb up the ancient stairs.
The building gives off power, some of the strongest I've encountered. I walk through the door and a monk approaches. "You must the Young one?" I nod and he grabs my hand. "Do me the honors of allowing me to walk you into the sanctuary?" I smile at him kindly. "Of course, Brother....?" He chuckles. "Nicholas. I am the newest monk in the temple. I'm about two years older than you." My smile widens as he guides me down a hall, paintings of the same eight dragons in different places line the halls. "The Eight, they are older than time. Our records date back to the early formation of the first civilizations. They live with their Serpentine human counterparts, Kenji, for about 100 years. The length of a lifetime for us. They only choose another worthy Kenji when their current one dies, weather it be from battle or common sickness, or even of age. Your father, he was the first Kenji picked from the Serpentine of life after his Kenji passed do to an illness. He has been faithful to the Green one for many, many years. I only hope you do the same with the ones who chose you." He squeezes my hand. "You are destined for great things, Young One."
We get to a huge set of double doors and he turns to face me. "This is the innermost Sanctuary, it's the only place in exitance where all Eight can be present together in perfect harmony." He slowly waves his hand and the doors open. A wave of power hits me that's unlike any other, even more powerful then outside the sacred building. I close my eyes for a moment to adjust to the energy before he slowly guides me into the Sanctuary. I take a look around, slowly everything drains of it's color. Everything, that is, except the eyes of the eight Kenji. Their eyes stand out in the most vivid colors, pure in their power. That, and the statues of each Dragon. I look around and then lock eyes with my father, up near the front. His eyes are the most vivid Emerald Green I have ever seen. He smiles at me before it dawns on me. The eight aren't the only ones looking at me. The room is super quiet and Nicholas starts to walk me to the front pews. My father and Mother step out into the isle with me before turning to the front. A bulky man I've seen many times steps out of one of the hidden rooms with a staff.
"Ah, Young Joseph! Look how you've grown!" His voice booms through the room. I smile up at him. "Brother Thomas, it's nice to see you again." He chuckles. "Are you ready, Young One?" I take deep breath. "I'm ready to take my place in this world, I'm ready to accept my destiny." He chuckles again. "That's very well said. Come up here, Joseph." I walk up the stairs and stand before him. He reaches out and put his hand on my head. A searing fire shoots into my head and it takes everything in me not to whimper at the pain. Images flash through my mind, but they move so quickly, I can't make any sense of them. It suddenly stops and I feel myself swaying. I regain my balance and take a deep breath, opening my eye. I look up at Thomas, his eyes are a bright brown, he's smiling. "You are strong, my boy. This will easy for them. You remember what each is correct?" I smile. "I do. Green; life, Black; Death, Yellow; electricity, Purple; Calmness and emotions, Red; fire, Blue; water, brown; earth, white; air." He nods approvingly. "Shall we?" I nod.
