"I want to be an airbender."

The dinning room fell silent after you said this. Ursa immediately stopped chewing her food and looked up at her husband, Ozai, who no longer held a warm, gentle smile. Zuko looked at you with wide eyes and mouth slightly agape while Azulai stared forward with a blank expression, saying nothing.

Your mother immediately stood up, nearly knocking her chair over while you father flinched at her sudden movements.

"(Y/N)!" She nearly screeched, almost as though you were about to be snatched up by the devil.

You looked around, confused before your father broke the silence that followed after your mother.

"Forgive her, king Ozai, she has been reading too many of those ridiculous old air bending scrolls." Your father quickly said, holding his hands together as if praying for the holy spirits.

Ozai, with a blank expression, turned his head towards your father.

"And why would she be reading air bending scrolls. Where did you get them." Ozai said in a calm tone that nearly chilled you to the bone.

"M-my great grandfather aided in the destruction of the air temples and took those scrolls in as trophies." Your father stated.

"Our daughter has had a hard time with reading and she would refuse to read anything else but those scrolls, so I didn't think she would take anything out of those scrolls other then a few new words. I really thought they were harmless." Your mother finished.

Ozai stared at the two, processing their words before a voice chimed in.

"Ozai, she is only 6. She hasn't even heard of the war yet." Iroh said.

Ozai seemingly ignored his brother and turned to you with his stern expression and spoke.

"Do know what happened to the air benders?"

You tilted your head down before muttering a no.

"Why do you want to be an airbender?" He asked yet again.

"Because... I can't firebend..."

He laid his chin on his hand, staring at you with unblinking eyes.

"And?"

"... I can't firebend and I thought... I thought that air bending was really cool. I mean, some people hate earth and water benders, but I've never heard anything about air benders..."
"They have been extinct for a hundred years, child."

Ozai sat up straight before continuing.

"No one would ever rant about them because they aren't a problem anymore. Another thing is that in order to have the potential to airbend, you need to be related to airbenders. You are the offspring of firebenders. If you cannot fire bend either, then you are a non-bender."

You kept your eyes to your feet. You could nearly feel the tears behind your eyes. Not because of Ozai, but because you just learned that you had no chance at becoming an airbender.
