Chapter 3

I stared at the screen in the front. There was a lecture for every graduating class. It was about what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go after graduating. I had not really thought about what i wanted to do. I forced myself to pay close attention so i could decide much easier. The whole hall was dark so it was quite difficult for me to take down notes.

In the background, i heard someone cough and a door opening. There was a gush of cold wind and then there was the sound of footsteps. The chair beside me squeaked as someone sat in it. i was still bent over my notebook, squinting in the dark. My eyes were hurting and my back was sore from having to bend over so much.

“Sorry i was late,” i heard Dave whispered beside me.

I did not look up. “Where were you?”

“I had to do something,” he replied.

I scribbled my last sentence before looking at him. “What?”

“Just something,” he answered, looking at the screen.

“Fine. I guess we’re starting to keep secrets from each other, huh,” i said, turning my eyes to the front. I waited as i hung the bait.

There were a few minutes of silence as we listened to the mono voice of the lecturer. There was a student snoring behind me and it was distracting. I knew Dave was thinking about what i just said. He was deciding whether he should spill what he knew. I had a small smile on my lips as i could feel him tensed up beside me. i wanted to laugh at how he was so easy to read.

“I had to help out at the school library,” he whispered suddenly.

I bit my lip to stop myself from laughing out loud. “Why?”

“Mrs Porter wanted me to help her arrange books,” he replied quietly.

“Did you tell her you had this talk?” i asked, holding back laughter.

“Yeah,” he replied.

“Did you tell Eunice that too?” i asked, laughing a little.

He jumped in his sit when he turned to me. “You knew!”

“Shhh!” someone said angrily at us.

I laughed, covering my mouth with a hand. “Who did you think told Mrs Porter you would love to help her out?”

“You!” he accused, angry but quiet.

“You’re fast,” i said, rolling my eyes.

“Who put Eunice there? You?” he asked, furious now.

I chuckled. “No. She volunteered first but was excited when she found out you’d be spending your afternoon with her.”

I heard him groan and i could imagine him running his fingers through his hair in frustration. “I’d get you back for this.”

I laughed. Eunice had had a crush on Dave for years. They dated at secondary 1 after much persistence from her. He thought it would not be so bad and he could give her a chance. Unfortunately, she was too much for him. He could not stand her and they broke up three days later. Ever since then, she had tried to hold on to him, sending text messages and calling him. No matter how hard he tried to push her away, she kept crawling back. It was hilarious and sadly, pathetic.

“How was it?” i asked, grinning.

“Don’t you wanna take that down?” he asked through clenched teeth.

“Oh, yeah,” i agreed, laughing softly.

I scribbled down notes. We did not talk much during the lecture. I was too busy taking down information while Dave was slowly dozing off. Once, his head fell back and his whole body nearly fell back as well. I had caught him in time, making him wake up instantly. He made such a loud noise the lecturer warned him to keep quiet or he would be forced to leave.
