How does one measure intelligence? On things known or things forgotten? Based upon "book-smart" or "Street-smart"? Who determines how intelligence is measured? Is it you or is it me? Is there a definite definition, or is intelligence something immeasurable? Can a person truly be stupid, or does everybody possess intelligence? What do we really know about intelligence?
Perhaps intelligence is not measurable, but only relative. One person can never know everything, so ones intelligence can only be relative to ones surroundings, life, past, and environment. But is intelligence only measured by what a person knows? If so, are all children idiots? They know very little in the scheme of the world, so how can there be a truly "smart child"? Would not such a thing be a walking oxymoron? Why is it then that society is filled with "bright children"? Is it something we say to make our youth feel good, or do we really have bright children?
If intelligence is measured by how much we know, adults are hardly better than children. Even if one has achieved ones doctorate in a field, they cannot possibly know everything pertaining to their fiield, or even everything that has been discovered in their field, And this is only one field of many. Adults then would also be incapable of intelligence.
Is it at all possible then to have an intelligent person? Has society been lying to us all of these years, or are there truely intelligent people? If we opt to believe the latter (as we should) we must consider another way to measure intelligence.
What way, then, are we left with to measure intelligence? Perhaps intelligence could be based on out cumulative knowledge in addition to our desire to learn. This way, a person cannot truly be unintelligent unless they know little and possess no desire to learn more. Now take a look around you and reconsider the people that you come into contact with on a daily basis. Who is really unintelligent? Are they the same people that you thought of, or are they new people? Perhaps it is neither. Then again, it could be you.
