"Millie, what would I do without you?" her mother whispered with a soft voice

"I don't know, mum" she says with a goofy smile. Her braces delicately hit the top of her lip as she starts laughing at her mom.

"Im glad that you are happy, my little angel" her mother, Kelly, says while moving Millie's chocolate brown hair behind her ear. Kelly softly smiled at the resemblance to her father.

"Why do you say that mum?" Millie innocently questioned. Kelly frowned as she rubbed a purple spot on her face.

"There are some things you do not understand Millie, but the only thing I can say is that love can crush you, more than it can benefit you.

Millie Brown was an intelligent girl, and she understood what she was talking about. Millie sighed.

"Why does daddy hit you mum?" Millie whispered

"We just fight a little, mills. Nothing to worry about" Kelly adds with a reassuring tone, but anyone in their right mind could tell she was lying.

Millie nods, and scampers to her room,  when she hears a vase break. She jumps and gasps quietly. Millie tip-toes to the bottom floor and hears her mother & fathers conversation. Her siblings were involved too, besides for Ava, who was only a few months old at the time, where things were simpler.

Millie heard her sister, Paige screaming at her father with fury. Then the sound of her brother, Charlie, and then the heart-wrenching sound of a gunshot. Then two, then three.

Millie's eyebrows furrowed as she wondered what the mysterious sound was. She walked up to her room, and found her father waiting there for her.

"Millie" Her father regarded, with no emotion.

"Yes, father" Millie said, with a giant gulp lurking in her throat.

"Where's mom and da-"

Millie loudly gasped as she woke up drenched in sweat. The certain nightmare replaying in her head like a broken vinyl. The same one over and over again for 3 years. Millie's therapist had mentioned that these memories would take quite a long time to get over. Millie scoffed when she heard that from the therapist, but soon realized it was reality. Millie's eyes quickly gazed to the high-tech alarm clock, which was a gift, from her best friend, Sadie.

"9:00 AM, are you fucking kidding me?" Millie shouted as she squinted at the clock, making sure she saw the numbers correctly. After many attempts of looking she jumped out of bed, her low iron getting the best of her as she stumbled onto the carpet.

She slipped on her work uniform slowly, just as a normal day would start. She stared at herself in the mirror with displeasure as Millie tucked down her skirt with a groan. It was no secret that she was insecure, and some of her classmates made sure of that.

Her phone made a sound, signifying a message from Sadie. I mean, she had no other friends,  so who else could it be? Millie read the text over as she scrambled to the bathroom sink and brushed her hair with the other hand.

She lifted her shirt as she felt a familiar scar on her chest, which reminded her of a certain memory.

Millie sighed as she quickly put her work shoes on, hopping outside of her apartment. It took a while for her to get the money for it, but Sadie helped her get the money by working as baristas at Starbucks.

They were both incredibly smart, graduating from college at 16 years old, and accepted to any Ivy-League school that they wanted.

This all worked out, and were the talk of the school, until Sadie got pregnant at 17, she was drunk, and her boyfriend left her after finding out the news.
