Pax

Christmas break arrived, and we all went home for Christmas. We were bringing people with us. I couldn't wait since it was my first Christmas with Shaun as an official couple. Plus, he was staying with us, which was even better.

We arrived home and dragged our bags into the house. I hit the door and tackled Ma before my brothers got a chance. Pops pulled me off of Ma.

"Pax, you have plenty of time to spend with your Ma," Pops told me as my brothers tackled Ma. Pops sighed.

"I've missed you, boys," Ma told us.

"We missed you more, Ma," Payton told Ma.

"It's official," Presley said.

"What is?" Patton asked.

"You and Pax are the shortest members in the family," Presley reminded us.

"That is not true. Ma is shorter than us," I said.

"Hey!" Ma yelled as we chuckled. "I'm not that short."

We looked at Ma.

"Okay, so I'm an inch shorter than the twins," Ma grumbled.

"Yeah, but the perfect fit for me," Pops said, wrapping his arm around Ma.

That made us smile. We give our parents hell, but no one can say that they don't love each other. It's the love everyone wants, and one I hope I get with Shaun.

I walked over to Pops. "Do you care if I go to the bakery and practice?" I asked.

Pops looked at me, as did the others. I bounced around in my spot, waiting for an answer.

"Only if we can go with you," Parker mentioned as I looked at my brothers, who gave me a look.

"Well, uh," I said, anxiously.

"How about you, boys, and I go down to the bakery together? I'll call Dad to join us," Pops suggested.

"Okay," I said with hesitation. That's not what I hoped for with my request. I wanted to practice making cakes to surprise Shaun.

We went to the bakery, and Grandpa was waiting for us. I went to the kitchen and started grabbing ingredients as everyone watched until Grandpa shoved them out of the kitchen.

"Thanks," I said to Grandpa.

"No worries. Your brothers worry about you," Grandpa mentioned.

"When my brothers watch me work makes me nervous," I replied.

Pops walked into the kitchen and guided me with making the cake, instructing me on what to do. I listened and followed the steps. I told no one, but I used to love coming to the bakery and watch Pops' work. He found enjoyment with it. Plus, I got to spend time with Grandpa.

I put the cake pans into the oven and waited.

"So, I was thinking," I said as both looked at me. "I want to major in culinary arts along with becoming a pastry chef, then work at the bakery."

I looked at Pops and Grandpa, who looked at me.

"Or not," I sighed as I played with a hand towel.

"I think it's a good idea," Pops mentioned.

"Considering one day I will retire, the family business can pass down to other generations," Grandpa added.

I looked at both of them with hope. "Really?" I asked.

"Sure, why not?" Pops asked.

That made me smile. I couldn't wait to tell Shaun. The cake finished baking, and I pulled it out of the oven, setting it on a rack to cool. Shaun came into the kitchen as I admired the cakes.
