The year is 1974, my freshman year of High School. One day, I was sitting at lunch by myself as usual, when I suddenly saw this really cute guy a few tables down from me reading a book. My heartbeat quickened. He had very curly blonde hair, blue eyes, and he wore glasses. He was also very well dressed. I was very tempted to go talk with him because he was sitting alone, but my anxiety got the best of me. Once I finished my lunch, I put away my tray and sat back down until the bell rang. This same thing happened for about a week. The guy never noticed me there, but one of the popular girls, Giselle Peck happened to notice me eyeing the guy. She comes over to me.
Giselle: Hey Taylor!
Taylor: H-hi....
Giselle: Are you like... staring at that nerd over there?
Taylor: N-no....
Giselle: Oh, but I saw you! You know that staring at people is considered very creepy, right?
Taylor: That.... wasn't my intention... but...
Giselle: Ok, whatever! You're too retarded to understand proper social skills! I can tell you're crushing on him! Don't you know that crushing on nerds is like, not normal?
Taylor: Well, I guess I'm not normal then!
Giselle: Haha! Clearly! That guy was collecting mold from a tree stump earlier! Totally nasty! And besides, he's a senior and you're a freshman.
She walks off laughing and the bell rings. I walk to my next class in tears. 2 days later I was walking to my next class and I see a crowd in the hallway. My crush is in the middle of it and a guy who is a few inches shorter than him is yelling at him.
Walter: Why were you scraping mold off that tree, Spengler? You trying to get us all sick or some shit?
Egon: No... it's part of my assignment for science class.... we all have to do it...
Walter: Bullshit! Mr. Sullivan didn't assign that!
Egon: Ok, even if he didn't actually assign it, I still find spores, molds and fungus very fascinating!
Walter: Ew! That's disgusting! Mold boy!!
I could tell my crush is holding back his tears, so I decided to be brave and step in.
Taylor: Hey! Leave him alone!
Walter: What do you want, retard?
Taylor: Let him enjoy collecting what he wants!! I'm sure you collect something too!
Walter: Shut the fuck up and stay out of my business! Go back to the special ed room!
Giselle is standing there watching as well. Walter is Giselle's older brother, so it makes sense that they act the same. Suddenly the bell rings and everyone leaves. I help my crush pick up his books.
Taylor: Are you ok?
Egon: I am... thanks so much for standing up for me... nobody ever does that...
Taylor: I know exactly how that feels... I get bullied too... My name is Taylor by the way!
Egon: My name is Egon! Oh boy, I have to get to class! Thanks again!
Taylor: See ya!
We each head off to class. My heart is absolutely fluttering because I finally talked to him! In class, I had trouble focusing as usual. I was fidgeting with a pen, and of course I got yelled at for it even though I can't help it. Nothing new. I couldn't help but think about Egon. I was really excited for lunch next period because I knew I'd get to see him again. Once that time came, he saw me enter the cafeteria and he waved to me. I waved back of course.
Egon: Hey Taylor! Would you like to sit with me?
Taylor: Sure!
We grabbed our lunch and sat down together. We didn't say much because we both have a bit of social anxiety. Giselle and Walter saw us sitting together in the distance.
Walter: Ew... the nerd and the retard are sitting together....
Giselle: He seems like he's been a bit distracted in class lately.
Walter: Yeah. Probably daydreaming about her...
Giselle: You know what would be funny?
Walter: What, sis?
Giselle: Since Mom is a very powerful member of the PTA here, we should try to get Taylor kicked out!
Walter: Yes!! That's genius!!! Romeo and Juliette will never see each other again!!
Giselle: Yes! I'll go talk to mom about it later!
And she does just that. Giselle goes to talk to her mom in her office.
Giselle: Hi Mom!
Mrs. Peck: Hello Giselle!
Giselle: So... I'm really worried about that really smart kid! You know, Egon Spengler! He's had that aspergers girl Taylor Mahoney on his mind! I'm worried that she might become a distraction to him and hinder his studies!
Mrs. Peck: Oh? Well that's not good...
Giselle: Exactly! I saw this ad in the newspaper for this boarding school for people with aspergers in the Bronx! Maybe you should transfer her there!
Mrs. Peck: Perhaps.... thank you for bringing this to my attention! I know I can always count on my daughter!
For the next few days, Egon and I wave to each other in the hallway. One day after school, my crackhead foster mom comes to me and tells me that I'm getting transferred to a boarding school for people with special needs. I break down in tears knowing I'll never see Egon again.
Foster Mom: Pack ya shit! Ya leaven' tomorrow early in the morning!
I do as she says, but I realize I never got Egon's contact information. After packing, I cry myself to sleep. The next few days, Egon notices I'm not there anymore, but he thinks I'm just sick. Weeks pass and he still hasn't seen me. He began to worry. He visited the principal to ask what happened.
Egon: Mrs. Fletcher, may I come in?
Mrs. Fletcher: Of course, Egon!
Egon: I'm curious, what happened to Taylor? Is she ok? I haven't seen her in weeks.
Mrs. Fletcher: Taylor Mahoney? She was transferred to another school.
Egon: Oh..... which school?
Mrs. Fletcher: Unfortunately, I am not allowed to disclose that information. I apologize.
Egon: Ok.... thank you Mrs. Fletcher...
Egon was absolutely distraught knowing he'd never see me again. He continued to do his best in school, studying as usual, but he'd continue to think about me. I would also think about him while in boarding school. In 1978, I graduated, and Egon was a junior in college, studying science. We thought about each other from time to time, but nothing could prepare us for what was to come in the next few years.
