It was an ordinary Sunday afternoon for an ordinary person like Sierra. Studying in the morning and self care in the afternoon, that was Sierra's Sunday routine. Nothing too interesting, nothing too simple but she enjoyed it. Spending her time alone, lost in her thoughts was one of her favorite things. She would get completely lost in a book, get mad over a video game or endlessly scroll down on social medias, nobody would bother her. Social medias has not been her favorite thing to watch lately. It was filled with social, racial, religious and economic issues from all over the world. Terrorist attack on Monday, epidemics on Tuesday, economic crisis on Wednesday, ecological catastrophe on Thursday, genocide on Friday, corrupted politicians on Saturday, victims of racism on Sunday. Not a single day was peaceful. The only one thing that could bring her joy through social media was her favorite make-up brands announcing new products. Otherwise, social media were not fun anymore.
She was indeed "woke" and knew a lot about today's issues but unlike her peers, she did not want to focus on them, to fight against them. "It will get worse anyway" she would often think. However sometimes she would be daydreaming about something totally different. She would daydream about the changes she could've made if she was slightly powerful. She had plenty of time to imagine a world were people feared and respected her, a peaceful world where all evil would be erased because she had the power to do so.
"Ah... I wish I could do something about this"
She truly wanted to change the world she was living in. The racism, the climate change, the poverty, she wished to change every single thing. From black people being unfairly killed by the police to people being persecuted for their faith, she wanted to erase each thing that made people suffer. Her daydreams would essentially be about the same thing. She had mystical powers, a huge amount of money or an incredible political power and could do anything she wanted from eradicating hunger to kill terrorists by snapping her fingers. Then she would wake up, turn on the tv and listen about that woman who was killed in the hands of her husband despite having filed multiple restraining orders against him. This world was just a mess. The present was bad, the past was bad and the future was going to be even worse. It couldn't be helped.
She lied down on her bed while letting out a long sight. She had a headache, as usual. Headaches were a part of her daily life since she was 14. She never bothered consulting a doctor since she knew it would disappear after taking medicine and napping for a little bit more than 30 minutes. As she closed her eyes she felt the pain growing stronger than it has ever been before. She frowned and started to massage her temples
"This damn headache."
If it was this painful she wouldn't be able to fall asleep. If she couldn't sleep, the pain wouldn't disappear. That was troublesome.
"Do you think you would be able to solve this world's issues if you had all the power in the universe?"
Sierra quickly opened her eyes and got up as fast as she could, worsening the pain and making her extremely dizzy.
"Who- " she asked out loud despite knowing that she was alone in the small apartment and that the voice came from inside her head, which didn't make sense. Was she hallucinating from the medicine ? She closed her eyes and tried to relax as much as she could.
"What if I gave you all the power in the universe? Would you be able to fix everything?"
This time, she couldn't open her eyes nor get up. The pain had never been this strong. It was like someone was standing on her forehead and using all their body strength to smash Sierra's head. The pain soon became unbearable.
"What was that?"
Sierra's headache was gone and her body felt numb. She assumed she had just woken up from a long nap and proceeded to get up. However, she didn't feel her soft mattress under her palms but cold stones.
"Wh- where am I? What is going on?
Her surroundings were so dark she couldn't see her feet but she knew it wasn't her apartment. There was no way such a room existed there. It was cold and humid, it smelled like nothing she ever smelled before and even if she didn't try to move a bit, she knew it was small. She tried to collect her thoughts and recall what happened. She was chilling at home, she had a headache so she took medicine then she went to sleep and...
Right before she could even think about what happened next, the pain in her head was back. "Did I faint from the pain? It was quite painful.... But it doesn't tell me why I'm here."
"I will give you all the power in the universe. Let's see if you can do something with it."
The voice that was previously inside her head was now coming from her surroundings. It was like that voice came from the air filling the room she was in. It didn't come from behind her or in front of her, it was all around her. That warm presence embraced her entire body and before she could mutter a word, she fainted again.
She woke up once again in a totally different place. It was a spacious room lavishly decorated and where most of the walls were covered by colorful glasses, letting the sun in, filling the room with its shining light. Actually, the entire room was made of glass, from the furniture behind and in front of her to the doors, everything was made of glass. But she didn't have time to pay attention to that, something was wrong with her. She took a look at her hands, her long and slim fingers didn't change a bit. She could tell that her skin color was still as rich as before and it looked like her body was the same too. Her face didn't change neither but something was odd. She felt like it was not her body anymore, there was something different. She slowly got up and realized she was not wearing her pajamas but instead of her satin pants and her lace bralette she loved, she was dressed in a long silky white gown and glass shoes. She stared at her reflection in one of the thousands of glasses around her and couldn't help but gasp. She looked like a goddess in this attire.
"There she is!"
The glass room was no longer silent. A dozen of men wearing weird capes got in and were looking at Sierra, in awe. They looked both frightened and amazed by the girl standing in front of their eyes. Then, an old man with a long gray beard took a step forward and began to read from a book.
"Hair like clouds, skin richer than the most expensive wood, skin softer that cream, eyes sparkling like jewels. You shall serve this divinely sent person with all your might and your life will prosper"
"Well... yeah I have an afro so it can be compared to clouds, I'm black so... yes my skin is rich, I just exfoliated and applied the most expensive body lotion so my skin better be soft and... I've always been told I had sparkling eyes but..... what is going on?" she thought without moving or letting a sound out of her mouth.
After a few seconds, the old man kneeled in front of Sierra, instantly followed by the rest of the group.
"We offer our life to you, Goddess Neira."
