“I’m bored,” Dave murmured.

“Stop distracting me. Next week is our exams,” I reminded him sternly. I turned back to my revision.

“Jo, I’m thirsty,” he said.

“Go get yourself a drink,” I muttered, still reading.

“I’m gay,” he blurted.

“Dave, stop it,” i warned, glaring at him.

The whole afternoon, we had been at the library. I was trying to study. Note: I said trying. Having Dave with me was absolutely distracting. I had told him that i was studying and i did not want him to distract me. Dave promised to be good. Unfortunately, that promise only lasted for ten minutes.

I had forced him to revise by giving him a paper to do. He was still on the third question with no sign of finishing. While i was reading some notes, he had thrown paper balls at me. It was unbelievable since I was seated two tables away from him. After he ran out of paper, he just moved to sit with me. It was impossible to make this boy sit still and get some work done.

“I think we’re done,” Dave whispered to me.

I rolled my eyes and concentrated on my book. “Go if you’re done.”

“I’m not going unless you’re coming with me,” Dave said, folding his arms.

“Fine. I’m not going anywhere soon,” i informed him.

Dave stared at me and i ignored him. In the end, he gave up and went back to his notes. I smiled at my small victory. We were silent for the next few minutes. I was surprised that Dave actually shut up and was concentrating.

He sat there with his face scrunched up with focus. I wanted to laugh at how serious he looked. A lock of dark hair fell into his eyes and I smiled subconsciously. There was something about him that made me want to keep staring. Maybe it was the way the sun lit his hair from the back. Or the way his eyes were serious and determined. His whole being demanded my attention. He captivated me and I was fast falling deeper.

“Like the view?” Dave teased, snickering.

I rolled my eyes. “Get back to work.”

He laughed. I stared at my notes, blushing at being caught staring. I have to be more careful. At least, he did not freak out or whatever. He just brushed it off and teased me. As usual. So he must not suspect anything. I hit myself mentally. Obviously he does not know. Dave was one of the densest people i know.

I sighed and saw a group of girls giggling. They kept glancing at Dave. Jealousy crept slowly into my heart. Shit. Dave was oblivious to it, still trying to figure out the answer to a question. Obviously, girls would ogle at him. Girls in school fought for his attention. I would not have known him if Dee had not dated him. I wonder what our lives would have been like if Dee never dated him. Would we have come together on our own?

I noticed the girls glancing again and I glared at them. They took no notice of me. I know this kind of girls. They thought that their looks could get them whatever they wanted. I never liked those girls. And i would definitely hate it if she came up to Dave and flirted. That image made my blood boil.

Without thinking, i reached out and grabbed Dave’s free hand. He looked up at me, slightly surprised. I saw the girl at the table grimaced when she saw our intertwined hands. She gave me a look that suggested she thought i was some kind of rodent. I grinned when she looked away. Dave followed my gaze.

“What was that?” he asked.

“Nothing,” I replied, pulling my hand back.

He let me pull my hand back, deciding to let the matter drop. I was still shocked at what just happened. Where did all that jealousy come from? Dave was just my best friend. That was what he thought of me as. I needed to really watch myself. If i keep acting weird around him, he was bound to catch on. And there are other people who were not as dense as him. They might catch on faster and i was comfortable with people not knowing about me having feelings for Dave.
