Grey had searched and searched for the perfect job when he had his sixteenth birthday. He had wanted to get as close to scientific Discovery as he could without a degree, which as you could guess was very difficult. He had gotten a job as a cubical worker at alpha labs, they were famous for the invention of micro-organisms, they weren't robots, but if you looked at the description you would think that. They are creatures created in a lab that can be "programmed" while growing to do any thing, from delivering medicine or removing stitches.

As gray went to the front desk to check in, he noted that the stench of cigarette smoke was in the air. From the grape vine of break room whispers he had found out the boss was a lazy fat man. Gray had never seen him, not even during the employment process as he would think, but all the paper work was signed by the nice secretary. From what he had herd the boss was a horrible man. Grey checked in at the front desk and headed to his cubical. The whole room was quite this was normal since every one had work to do. Next to grays computer was a small stack of papers, his work for the day. The electric kettle on the far side of his desk gleamed silver with a black lid, lip and handle. Gray flipped up the lid a went to his only drawer a pulled it open, in it was normal office supplies like tape, push pins and staples. In the corner grey kept a basket full of teabags. Grey also kept a collapsible cup to drink his tea in. He started the kettle and booted up his computer and went to the break room to get milk.

Grey had his tea and started his day, the top paper was a letter from a school child, it needed to be shredded, company policy. The sound of the shredder cut through the silence like a scream. Grey wasn't desensitized to shedding hopes and dreams, he wasn't desensitized to the noise either. The tea calmed his nerves down, his coworker's nerves as well, he noticed that his coworkers lingered around his cubical, that was fine by him. Today though, was quiet, which was also fine by him. His next paper in the stack was a article from a magazine he had never herd of asking for a comment on the new Discovery alpha labs had just made. They explained it as "a micro-organism that can augment living organisms." They asked for a comment on how some people consider it unethical, grey thought the scientist would have to give the comment, but this was his job "we will only use this for medical purposes." Gray wrote on the paper and put the paper in the out box.

When it was grays lunch break he grabbed his bag and went to the break room, no one was there strangely, the lights were still on and the fan still running. He ate his lunch with out a thought of it.

Then there was a scream.
