Chapter One

Everyone knows that feeling you get when you move to a new school. It's always awkward and everyone's eyes are on you. Every move you make there's always someone watching. That's how my first day is. My eyes stayed focus on my box of things as I followed the Chief of Police to my office. Once we were at my new desk, I set my things down and smiled at him.

"Here's where you'll be working as of now, Ms. Vasquez.",he spoke with authority.

"I hope you enjoy your stay. Also, there is someone I'd like you to meet who will be training you the ups and downs of being a detective.", the Sheriff said.
A man of 6 feet stood in the door way, black hair and hazel eyes. He had a slight five o' clock shadow and wore a dark grey striped vest with a red tie. I couldn't help but stare at him. He gave a side smile as he held his hand out for a shake. "I'm Detective Castellanos."
I smiled lightly and took his hand gently, shaking it with ease. "It's an honor to meet you.", I said softly. He stared at me for a good minute before turning to the Sheriff with a wolf like smile. "Don't worry, Sheriff. We'll take good care of this one."

"Alright. You guys, be careful. Have a good day... Detectives.",he said with the tip of his hat and left.

I started to unpack my things and looked back to see him leaning against the door way. He then walked into the office, closing the door, a dark look on his face. If I thought he was a nice man earlier what he said next proved me wrong.

"If I see you cause any trouble or act like a dumbass, I won't think twice to fire you. Got that?",he said pointing his finger at me, his eyebrows knit together.
I swallowed thickly and nodded. "Yes, sir.",was all I could say. This guy was a good actor. Now I knew for sure I had to take this seriously. He nodded then opened the door and left.

A few hours had passed since my last encounter with the Detective. Most of the day, I was filing papers for him and finally decided that I needed some coffee. I made way to the lounge where there was a man who wore glasses. He must be another Detective. I hoped he was at least somewhat nicer.

I grabbed a foam cup and smiled at the man beside the coffee pot before I poured myself some. He smiled back and raised an eyebrow. "Hey. You're the new Detective, right?",he asked. I looked up at him and nodded. "Yeah. I'm Sophia Vasquez. Nice to meet you.",I greeted and held a hand out. He grabbed my hand gently and shook it.
"Pleasure to meet you, Detective. I'm Joseph Oda.",he greeted and sipped his own coffee.

I gave a curt nod and poured some sugar and cream in my cup. Boy, did I need this more than ever. I took a rather large gulp of my coffee as Joseph kept his eyes on me. I then looked back at him. "Do you work with Detective Castellanos?", I asked curiously. Joseph nodded and replied,"Oh yes. Sebastian is a very close friend of mine. But ever since the incident, we haven't been that close lately."

Incident? I cocked my head to the side, a concerned look on my face. "What happened? If you don't mind me asking."

Joseph looked around before leaning in towards my ear so no one would over hear. "He lost his wife and daughter recently. He's turned to drinking his sorrows away. Don't tell anyone I told you.",he said quickly and stood back up to drink more of his coffee.
That's why he's been so bitter then. I felt really bad for the guy. "Well.. It was nice meeting you. I have to get back to filing," I said with a small laugh and made way back to my office.

The rest of the day seemed to drag on. I sighed and looked at the clock. It was almost 10 minutes to midnight. Groaning inwardly, I ran a hand through my hair as I walked to Sebastian's office to drop off the most recent cases. Letting out a deep breath, I knocked on his door. I heard a faint "Come in" and opened the door to step inside. He was buried in a folder, turning pages upon pages before he looked up to me and gave a slight glare.

"Vasquez. What do I have the pleasure of seeing you this evening?," he said bitterly closing the file in front of him.
"I brought the recent files you asked for, sir," I said lightly and walked up to his desk. His stare never left me as I came closer towards him.

It was kind of nerve-wracking to say the least. I felt like I was under house arrest with this guy and it was making me slightly uneasy. I knew I had to keep my guard up for this job since I couldn't risk losing it. I had worked so hard for this career, I wasn't about to lose it to some guy who had issues in his personal life no matter how drastic.

"About time, Vasquez. Just set them over by the filing cabinet," he said gruffly. I nodded once and set them where he told me to. I felt more like an assistant or receptionist than a Detective. It was starting to annoy me. After putting the papers back, I turned around and cleared my throat before speaking. He looked back up at me expectingly.

"Is there anything else you need before I turn in for the night, sir?", I asked with slight irritation in my voice. I hoped he couldn't tell. But luck wasn't on my side and he did.

Before I knew, He stood up from his chair and came from behind his desk. He had the meanest look on his face as he came towards me until I felt my back against the wall. For a second there I thought he wasn't going to hurt me but what he did next had me stunned, just a little.

Both of his hands were on the wall on each side of me. His face was merely inches away from mine and I could feel his breath ghost against my lips. His breath smelt like alcohol, not that it was bad. I tried my hardest not to blush. He kept staring into my eyes as if he was trying to decipher my thoughts. I didn't know what to think to be honest. It's not everyday your hot boss gets this close to you and your lucky if it even happens at all. Or you're just a sex fanatic who has a fantasy of having an affair with your boss. Either way, it was weird.

"Don't get in my way.", he said in a low dark tone.

He then pulled away from me and went back to his desk, shooing me off with the wave of his hand. "Try not to get killed on the way home, Vasquez.", he said before I closed his office door.
I let out my breath that I forgot I was holding in and sighed. Today was a long day and I had a feeling tomorrow was going to be an even longer day than usual. Now, if I can just get home without getting killed would be great.
