The conversation was short. Simple. Keirsten was blunt and got right to the point. They didn't like dancing around important topics.Well maybe a little.
"So, Splinter, if we're going to frequent this place there's something I've gotta tell you. It's really important to me and I feel like I should get it out in the open before miscommunications are made ya know?"
They took a breath. Splinter listened. He seemed to be good at that.
"So, I'm something called "Non-Binary," which means that I'm neither a girl nor boy. I'm just a person. That means that I don't use she or he, I use they. My pronouns are They/Them. It's really important to me and I really hope you understand because you seem like a great-"
"Keirsten"
They stopped the beginning of their tangent. Splinter looked at them in a fatherly sort of way.
"It is okay. I will address you as you wish. Although I do not understand it completely, I do understand it is important to you so I will do what I can to make sure you feel comfortable here. Would you like me to tell the others?"
Keirsten grinned, actually content. Sure, their hands were still shaking from nerves and they still needed to take really deep breaths, but they had decided that Splinter was their new favorite father figure quickly and answered his question.
"Well my crew already know. The turtles don't though so I think that would be kind of important. I'd rather tell them on my own though, maybe in a family meeting type thing?"
Splinter smiled. "It took a lot of courage to talk to me about this."
"I know," Keirsten grinned "I'm just the bravest heart you've ever come across aren't I?"
"Do not get too confident." Splinter warned, smiling and Keirsten giggled at their little joke, glad Splinter was playing along.
"So when should we do it?" Right back to business. "Obviously it shouldn't be too soon. We just got out of a- what would you call it? A fighting session? They must be tired Splints."
"Do not call me that, and we should do it when you are ready."
Keirsten was not ready. Better now than never they guessed.
"Right. Okay. Now works." They were riding the confidence they gained after telling Splinter, but when everyone was gathered in the living room looking at them curiously whilst they had the floor, they felt it plummet.
Crap.
"Okay, so uh, as the mere majority of you may know, I-uh," was never good with public speaking? Extremely nervous? Tell them Keirsten, you got this.
"I'm Non-Binary."
There. It's out. Not too hard.
"We know." Alyssa said, deadpan. Of course you guys know I told you the longest time ago-
"What's that? Is it like binary code?" - Mikey
"Wha- no-"
"No you dingus. I read this somewhere in gender psychology. Basically it's where the brain is neither male nor female so it doesn't line up with what the body looks like. It's like being transgender but for neither sex." - Donnie
