Chapter 16
Haley bounced on my bed as i tried to plug in the wire into the correct socket. I cursed when i hurt myself by hitting my head on my desk. Behind me, i could hear my bed springs squeaking. It was starting to get on my nerves. She had asked me what i was doing and tried offering help. Unfortunately, she was as illiterate about IT as i was. It was during these times i wished i had Sean here. But, he had chosen the worst times to have a weekend getaway with his friends at the lake.
“I think we should just wait for Sean,” Haley told me, hair flying everywhere as she continued to jump.
I frowned at the wire in my hand. “He’s only coming back in two days.”
“We could just use the tv downstairs, Jules,” she pointed out. “It’s easier.”
“But, mom doesn’t allow you to watch horror films. You can only watch it on Sean’s laptop,” i reminded her.
She sighed, flopping onto the bed, cheeks flushed and hair messy. “I’m an adult now.”
I laughed. “You’re only thirteen.”
“Exactly,” she said firmly. “I’m old enough.”
I shook my head and rolled my eyes. The sound of a doorbell made both of us turned to my open door. Haley ran out of my room, the sound of her footsteps filling the whole house. I sighed and stared at the wires again. How difficult could this be?
“Need help?” i heard a voice asked.
I grinned and turned to Dave. “Yeah. I have no idea about things like this.”
He chuckled and sat in front of me, taking the wires from me. I watched him and noticed something different. He was keeping something from me. I frowned.
“You’re frowning. I know what i’m doing, Jo,” he told me, smirking, reading my expression wrongly.
I shook my head and ran my fingers through my hair. I stood up, looking down at him. Wiping my hands on my jeans, I paced the room. He ignored me.
“All done,” he stated, brushing his hands on his jeans. “What’s wrong with you? Ants in your pants?”
“You’re keeping something from me,” i simply stated, holding his gaze.
“Okay, straight to the point...” Dave’s eyes dimmed and he stood up slowly. He sighed and rubbed his neck, slightly nervous. “I thought i could keep it low-key. But, you know me too well.”
“What is it?” i asked, worried.
“I’m leaving earlier. I thought i had another month but it’s been pushed up. I’m leaving this weekend,” he explained, brown eyes searching my face for my reaction.
I forced my face to remain blank eventhough i felt so numb. He was leaving this weekend. It was much too soon. “I see.”
“Jo, hey, look at me,” he urged, lifting my chin. “Nothing’s going to change. You’re still going to be my best girl.”
I smiled and pushed away from him lightly. I forced the sadness down. “I know. So, what the hell are we still here for? We should get out before you leave. We don’t know when exactly you’re going to come back, huh?”
He watched me, knowing exactly what i was doing. “Yeah, okay.”
I grabbed my jacket and tugged on his arm. I shouted to Haley that the laptop was all set up for her to watch her show and that I will be back for dinner.
