Six years have passed since my family was murdered by a monster. In fact, it was the very first documented monster attack.
Ten years earlier, mythical creatures such as vampires and werewolves came out of hiding. Some said they believed humanity had reached the point where they could be accepted in society. Others were more pragmatic and simply recognized that recent advancements in technology made it difficult to remain hidden.
I don't remember much about the attack. My nightmares are only glimpses of it and I'm not even sure if they're real or just the result of uneasy dreams. Aunt Leonora and Uncle Frank offered to look after me after that. They've both worked hard to make my life pleasant.
Even though I lost my parents, they gave me the chance to try and have a normal childhood. The government was content to let Aunt Leonora and Uncle Frank take me in. I have occasional psych interviews, to make sure I get the help needed in dealing with the trauma. It was annoying at first, but I eventually got used to it. After two years, my psychologist declared I'm doing as well as could be expected. The regular visits ended, although I was told I could call if I ever had any questions, or wanted someone to talk to.
The next day, I found myself at Bruce Wayne Memorial High School. I was about to take my exams. Entering the classroom, I see my teacher, Miss Lore. She had a golden lock of hair and her eyes are mesmerizing, and I had a secret crush on her like most of my male classmates. She sets up the desks like she always does during tests. The other teachers in the school always used to split up the students into boys and girls, yet Miss Lore never followed that archaic practice, instead letting her students sit wherever they felt most comfortable.
Taking a seat beside the window, I wait while Miss Lore hands out the tests, placing them face down on the desks. I watched Miss Lore finish handing out the tests waiting for the exam to start.
"Okay, you have thirty minutes to answer all the questions. You may begin," Miss Lore says firmly.
Instantly, the frenzied tapping of a pencil on paper fills the classroom. Glancing at my own papers, I wrote my name on the top left corner.
'Aidan Lyfell' I wrote on the blank space designated for my name in the top left corner. Then I read the questions, there are only thirty items but they get harder as they go.
Although the questions got harder as they go, for me, it was all way too easy. I breeze through the questions feeling quite smug by the time I finish.
Handing it to Miss Lore, she gave me a sweet smile and allowed me to go home earlier than my classmates. *The privilege of finishing first* I returned the smile and bid goodbye.
I find myself walking home alone; my friends were either stuck on their exams or had other commitments today. Completely lost in thoughts, I walked straight into someone and managed to knock him on his ass.
"Fuck! What do you want punk!" The kid picked himself up quickly and threw a punch to me.
"Waah! Hey… Aidan?! I didn't know it's you, I'm sorry I'm not watching where I'm going" the kid said as he froze when he sees me, his clenched fist immediately froze in front of my face.
"What are you up to again huh, Matt? And put that fist out of my face will yah?" I said as I pushed Matt's clenched fist away from my face.
Matthew Roberts awkwardly stands in front of me together with his three friends; Alex McDonald, Jimmy Follan and, Gregory McConnor. The most notorious of all the school bullies. They bully much everyone, even the larger boys, but not me.
They picked on me once but I left them battered and bruised after throwing a combo of kicks and punches, thus gaining the nickname of 'mr.miagi'. I know some martial arts myself since I frequent a local dojo, I was even accepted as a student of a well-known master that goes by the name 'Bruce Lii'. It was then that the four begged me to teach them martial arts, they even swore to become my lackeys accepting me as their boss. I didn't say I would teach them, but they kept on following me, kept on calling me boss.
"Nothing much boss, we were just picking rotten vegetables for the operation tonight. Come with us, at 7, rendezvous at the Silver's, it's gonna be fun boss!" Matt answered, his voice trails as he ran together with the four.
Shaking my head, I walk back home thinking what Matt had just said, I know what they are up to. The Silver's was a family of vampires. Although they were legal residents, people can't help but detest them since they are vampires. Also, recent news talked about murders associated with vampires, it can't help people but be wary of the vampire family in town.
*Stoning a vampire' residence seems fun. I bet it won't hurt to throw a few shots right? Besides, vampires are monsters, and I hate monsters the most. Monsters are the one responsible for the death of my family.*
