Chara's family and tribe were eradicated by humans. For hating humans so much, Chara eaten small amount of poisonous flowers BUTTERCUPS.
With the lack of will to live, Chara's anger for humans grew strong until Chara finally died.
Then Chara took over Asriel's body to take revenge on the humans.

Back then, the world consists of Humans, Monsters and the Divine. The truth about Divine was hidden from the world's history. God made Earth, he made three races to maintain balance.
There was this tribe that had a role to be a mediator among all of the races. By nature, all of the races lived in Harmony, .....however it didn't last long.
It was because of the Divine King. It all began when Divine race spread falsehood to Humans, and made them believe that Monsters are a threat to their own kind.
The rumors began to to spread life poison and at some point. Humans driven by fear, Humans come to the conclusion they should oppose a threat.
So the Humans formed a mob against the Monsters. Chara's father tried to stop them, but Humans were stubborn to listen. Because Divine has influenced them with their words.
So Chara's father told to Chara's mother to report the situation to their tribe leaders. Even though Chara's father knew the mediator between tribe cannot interfere with the Humans affairs.
He still tries to convince them and that's the moment he felt that the Divine has betrayed GOD'S rules. After a while, the news reached both races. As the rumor spreads people added more and more lies.
Monsters that are held captive were killed soon enough. So ASGORE, the king of monsters, could no longer stand the gruesome events. That's when war broke between two races and ended up in bloodshed.
