Another after another, each spec held itself in my memory for the thousandth time over.
How often did I find myself here? Looking to the stars, holding the year in my mind. Watching the flesh of time? Every night? Almost every night. At least it seemed like so.
"What am I doing?!" A desperate cry.
Sudden and quick I turned on my heel. I was alone but~
"How could I have done this?!" Behind my ear it screamed. Leaping forward I drew Cain to my side.
"What?!" I gasped.
"This... Isn't... Me..."
"Show yourself, phantom!" I demanded. Yet my own orders were unheard. Static took my eyes as I searched my world and yet I found nought. I was alone here.
"What have I done?!..." His voice sounded so wrong. Crooked and disgustingly human; disgustingly weak.
"That's not true... Don't say that!" Swift sorrows built behind my eyes. Wiping away tears had grown within me a fury.
"What kind of magic is this?" I growled. And for now there was silence. Yet, it left me not. Its presence was ever thick in my gut. Between the breeze, hedges, and my own mortal self hovered a sickening feeling. The wicked ail watched me with anxious eyes. I felt it drip its viscous self across me. A heavy weight was its eyes. Darting one way to another, every rustling leaf and fallen petal felt like spies. Spinning around, every noise was an agent waiting for my guard. I couldn't take it anymore.
"Where are-" "You."
... ... ...
...
Thoughts ceased, it was there. Behind me. A voice I recognized sat waiting for me to look, to see it... and how weak I was for I did.
"Vier..." He stood alone. Pouring from him came a thickening fog; from his sleeves, the fabric of his garb, to the holes of his mask seeped.
"What are you doing?" With no more a moment to come, the clanging of metal sounded. Rolling 'cross the stones underfoot came my crown; given by the bushes, was it.
"I'm so... So sorry..." A fierce pain found me as a key tore into my chest. I stumbled as a click hummed from within my breath. With a gasp I turned to run but there Vier stood. Raising my hand I fell back.
"Get away from me." I would scream but as I fell he vanished. Lying back upon my cape I found myself, as before, alone. That... Vier was nowhere to be found.
"What?..." I spat.
Quickly I rose. Dusting myself of filth what could be.
I held my tongue; whatever workings lay shrouded here had more depth than displayed.
Looking into this is more important...
I will make sure this doesn't happen again.
