Do you know how most funerals have a somber tone to them? People grieve and mourn for the dearly departed, except Nixon didn't get the memo. He went a different route with Karen's funeral.
"Nixon, please do me a favor and don't act like you," Nate warned Nixon as we stood there.
"You offend me with your lack of confidence in performing a funeral," Nixon told Nate.
"I don't give a shit if I offend the Pope. Do not screw this up," Nate told Nixon.
"Nate! We're in a funeral home. I don't think people would appreciate you swearing," Pat cautioned Nate.
"Patty, I'm in my nineties. I don't give a shit what people think," Nate retorted.
Pat sighed as I wondered how this funeral would go. If your ninety-something father has to warn you not to act like yourself, that's bad.
"Look, Uncle Jonas asked me to perform the funeral. I will give Aunt Karen the same courtesy she gave our family," Nixon offered.
"That's the problem, you won't," Nate argued.
Nate and Nixon argued while we watched. Cayson walked over to us.
"What are you both arguing about now?" Cayson asked Nate and Nixon.
"Dad doesn't have faith in my ministerial duties," Nixon grumbled.
"No one has faith in your ministerial duties, but the funeral won't bore people," Cayson reasoned.
"You're not helping," Nate told Cayson.
"Nate, Karen was a wet blanket. She sucked the fun out of everything," Cayson said, making a sucking noise.
"It doesn't matter. Did we forget that Jonas lost his wife, or the boys lost their mother?" Nate asked.
"No, that thought didn't escape me since Jonas cries all the time. No wonder Ma had to trick him into doing things like taking Patty to Homecoming," Cayson confessed.
Pat's eyes widened. Nate looked at Cayson with confusion.
"Oh, perhaps that secret should have died with Ma," Cayson mentioned.
Nate looked at Pat. "Did you know about that?" Nate questioned.
"How would I know that your mom did some shady stuff like this? Your mom always did shady stuff," Pat told Nate.
Cayson made a hasty retreat and went to find Jonas. Nate followed Cayson as Pat followed Nate. I learn about situations like these. Everyone spills the tea, resulting in chaos.
"The funeral should excite," Nathan mentioned.
"If Nixon is performing it, believe it," Noah added.
"I need popcorn," Nolan said, walking away.
"Dad will hurt you if you screw this up," Nash told Nixon.
"Dad can't do shit except for shuffle towards me. He's slowing down in his old age. Grammy had her cane," Nixon reminded Nash.
Nash and Nixon went back and forth on this, and the funeral director walked over to us.
"Reverend Gray, the family would like to start," the funeral director instructed.
"It's showtime," Nixon announced, rubbing his hands together. He walked away from us.
"Why do I have a feeling Nixon will screw this up?" Nash asked me.
"Because it's Nixon," I answered.
