Chapter 22

Noah peered closely at the girl talking to Michael. He wanted to believe it wasn't her. It couldn't be. But the answer was right infront of him, as clear as day. He glanced over at them again and saw their heads pressed close together. He shook his head, feeling suffocated. It just couldn't be her. Jay would never invite someone...Susie-ish. And the Susie he knew wouldn't dare wearing what the girl with Michael was wearing.

The loud thumping of the the music was messing with his brain so he decided to step outside to the porch with a drink.

It wasn't until he was fully out of the house that he calmed down. The weather was beautiful and the moonlight cast a soft glow on the wet roads. It had been raining a while ago, a sure sign that autumn had dropped in.

He took a tentative sip of his non alcoholic beer. It tasted like old pee but he swallowed it anyway. He needed something to numb his frenzied thoughts and these weird 'feelings' but he was driving home himself later and couldn't risk losing his driver's permit.

The sliding glass doors opened and closed shut behind him. He heard the thumps of someone's heeled shoes walking over to where he stood.

"Beautiful night, isn't it?"

Noah turned to look at his new companion. It was the girl Susie had started hanging out with. He didn't know her name but he knew she was somehow related to McKenzie Evans, the biggest slut at school.

"Yeah. It is."

The redhead closed her eyes and breathed in the smell of pine trees and smoked wood. Atleast, that's what Noah thought the outdoors smelt like right then.

She was a pretty thing. Her wavy red hair encircled her face like a wreath and the moonlight made it seem as if it was ablaze. She wore a bottle green dress that brought out the green in her eyes.

And he was pretty sure that she had caught him appreciating her beauty.

"I'm Andrea." she said to him, opening those orbs of emerald. Her voice was low and melodic. Maybe she sang.

"Noah." He murmured, setting his full glass of beer on a table behind them. He turned his attention back to her and saw his eyes had widened.

"So you're Noah. The same Noah who's been messing around with Susie's heart."

"I didn't know I had. Been messing around, I mean."

She shrugged nonchalantly. "That's what everyone at school's saying."

She was close to Susie, he knew that. But a feeling of unsureness washed over him. Was he still interested in Susie Rayner?

"What's Susie saying about all this?" he asked.

"Susie's over you... Or atleast she says she is. She's more concerned about breaking Michael's heart. Its depressing."

Noah mulled over this new piece of information. Susie was one confusing girl.

Next to him, Andrea shivered. It was getting cold out there on the veranda. He thought about doing the noble thing and giving her his jacket but he wasn't wearing one.

"Let's go inside." He whispered and placing his hand in the back of her neck, he took her inside.

* * * * *

As much as he didn't want to admit it, he had a lot of fun at Jay's party. Andrea was the most interesting girl Noah had ever met and definitely different from any other girl he had ever come across.

He glanced at her sleeping form on the passenger seat next to him. Susie had left without her in her car and Noah had willingly volunteered to drop her off at her house.

Driving along the narrow dirt lane that was a shortcut to the main road, Noah found himself thinking. An action he was better off not doing.

Michael's words from before rang like church bell's on a Sunday in his head. Maybe he did like Susie now because she was no longer interested in him. But right at that moment, Susie could be buried alive and he wouldn't care. He paused his stream of thoughts. They made him seem like an utter dick.

Andrea tossed in her sleep and Noah looked over at her, glad at the distraction. It was a wonder to him that Andrea was unknown around school. She was fun and hot and Noah felt some pride on the fact that none of the other guys at school knew about her. He could have her all to himself.

The thought scared him. Was he over Susie so soon? Or was he never in 'like' with her in the first place?

The evening he had spent with Andrea was so different than anything he had spent with any girl. She had a dry sense of humour and was a feisty little vixen.

When he thought of Susie now, he remembered her as a spineless, whiny bitch who had ruined his life. Maybe he was gay, he thought, and laughed at the notion of it.

He stopped the car in front of his house and his eyebrows knit together. Where did Andrea say she lived again?

He mentally banged his head on the steering wheel and poked her on the ribs. "Andrea!" he whispered, trying to wake her up but she just groaned and slapped his hand away from her in her sleep. It looked like he was going to have a sleepover that night.

He got out of the car and walked to the passenger side, opening the door and picking her up. She stirred but didn't wake up. He closed the door with his foot and locked the car.

His mother wasn't home for the weekend and Jake was at a sleepover. That only left Aaron to deal with but he was pretty sure that Aaron was either still out partying or so hungover that he wouldn't care.

He climbed up the stairs, only stopping twice to catch his breath and entered his room. One week and there were already two different girls in his bed - wow.

He laid her on it gently, brushing the hair off her face when he had. She snuggled into his blankets and the only sounds in his room were of her even breathing.

She seemed slightly uncomfortable in that tight dress of hers but Noah knew that she would feel even more uncomfortable if she woke up the next morning realising that he had changed her clothes so he let her be.

Fighting the urge to kiss her somewhere, anywhere, he switched off the lights and went to sleep in Jake's empty room.
